If the heater matrix is different between series 2 and 3 cars. Are series 3 matrix bigger or are they all the same?

As I remember the mk2 was copper and the mk3 was plastic matrix and the heater valves on them were the same difference ie early one metal and later plastic but they all interfit into the same hole and the heater box itself was the same.
Also as I recall the heater vallve worked in oposite direction with cable ie hot is cold and cold hot.
