Title: Belgrade, Serbia, Fiat (copies) and the Eurovision!
Post by: Thotos on June 02, 2008, 03:46:55 PM
I think we all know that Zastava (http://www.answers.com/zastava?cat=biz-fin) used to make Fiat based cars for the East European markets. Originally they were simply rebadged Fiats but eventually they developed certain Fiat cars to become new models in their own right as the Zastava 101 which is a Fiat 128 based 5 door hatchback and still in production in Serbia today.  I was told just yesterday that the motor division of Zastava was purchased by Fiat but I don't know if that is true. The Zastava company is also a military arms manufacturer as well as a manufacturer of household white goods.

Motoring in Serbia seems quite different to what we are used to in Western Europe and there seem to be a lot of old cars around as well as new ones of course. I even saw two Ferraris during my short stay there.

The MOT laws must be very relaxed though by the state of the sills on this 128

and car restoration seems something done in the street rather than a garage

I remember seing lots of Fiat 1500 in Cyprus back in the 60s and even though badged a Zastava this was still of special interest to me

By the way, that's my daughter walking away in the photo above muttering "come on dad! enough pictures of old cars, it's time for lunch!"

And here's a photo specially for Eugene  ;D There were loads of these strange looking things around  ;D ;D

Now for those of you who didn't believe I was going to the Eurovision Song Contest, here's some photographic evidence to convince you  ;) :D

Theo - I'll comment on the Fiat derivative pictures first? ;D ::) - I love seeing old Fiats and their cousins when I visit a new country and take as many pictures as I can - Much more interesting than scenery I'm afraid. Have you any more..? And your daughter's response is all too similar where the female gender is concerned.? ::)

I never know that Zastava made a 1500 equivalent - wonder if there is a Zastava 131 Sport knocking around..? ;)

I sort of expected some Eurovision pics in this posting but my attitude somewhat changed as I studied them more closely.? ?:D 8) Is it a co-incidence that there are scantily clad females in nearly all of the shots, or did all of the perfomers provide such "eye candy"?? :D ;D

Title: Re: Belgrade, Serbia, Fiat (copies) and the Eurovision!
Post by: Thotos on June 02, 2008, 05:02:36 PM
did all of the perfomers provide such "eye candy"?  :D ;D

Why do you think I like the Eurovision Song Contest  ;D ;D ;D Seriously though, the Eurovison Song Contest acts are as much about the visual appeal as they are about the song. Isn't that why Ireland had a turkey puppet? And there were Pirates, golf-karts on stage, World Champion skaters swirling next to the barefoot singer etc as well as the "eye candy" you refer to which as you say seemed to be in most of the acts but not in all. The UK had none of that, no visual appeal at all and they came last but blame it all on political voting. Maybe the Brits should be reminded that when they won in Ireland they did so by pulling the skirts off the female singers!  ;)

As to more photos of old Fiats/Zastavas, I don't have many because most of them were driven at such high speed that they were impossible to photograph. Plus my daughter kept pulling me along whenever I stopped to take a photo of a car  :-[  I didn't see any 131s and I am sure they were never made by Zastava. The Fiat based cars made by Zastava are (thanks to Wikipaedia for the info):

    * Fiat Campagnola - Production from 17 November 1953 until 1962, 4,640 units were built without modification.
    * Fiat 1400 - Production from August 1954 until 1961, without modification
    * Fiat 1100D - Many thousands of cars were produced.
    * Fiat 600 - Production of the Zastava 750 (later 850), nicknamed "Fićo", started in 1955 until April 2000. The model was very popular, 923,487 "fića" were produced by Zastava in 45 years without modification.
    * Fiat 615 - medium truck produced by Zastava Kamioni from 1957 - 36,000 Zastava 615 were built.
    * Fiat 1300/1500 - the same of Fiat original. The Zastava 1300 production was from 1962 until 20 December 1979. 201,160 Zastava 1300 were built without modification.
    * Fiat 850, Many thousands of cars were produced
    * Fiat-OM 40, produced from 1969, to replace the Fiat 615
    * Zastava 101, this car used the Fiat 128 base with many body modifications. Launched in October 1971 in Belgrade. The model Z101 was very popular. The vehicle is still in production today in 2008; 1,100,000 units were built thus far. Many CKD cars were exported in Egypt to Nasr car company.
    * Fiat 128 : the production of the Italian original model started in 1980, and the production of the 128 ceased in 2001. The model was called Skala 128.
    * Yugo 45 : Launched 2 October 1980, the production of the Yugo (or Z102) continues today. 750,000 units were built before the conflict of 1999. More than 150,000 units of the cabrio version were exported to the USA.
    * Fiat Daily : IVECO - Fiat V.I. division - from 1 January 1991 IVECO has held 46% of ?Zastava Kamioni?.
    * Zastava Florida : the production of Z103 Florida continues today in 2008, more than 160,000 units were built before the Kosovo war in 1999.
    * Fiat Punto : it's currently Zastava's most modern car and badged Zastava Z10 by Fiat. The production started in October 2006; 100 units daily.

Talking about skirts.

Isn't it the same with Formula One or any other motor racing event around the world. One would not be wrong to assume that these races seemed more like a beauty pagent!

Back to Fiat pictures, I like the 850 most.

zastava also produced

fiat 132 1800gls, 2000 and 2500d, actually just assembled them from parts ariving from italy, therefore most of 132's in ex yugoslavia are listed as zastava 132. there was at least 25.000 made

pz 125 (polska zastava), a polish fso and zastava cooperation produced fiat 125 some 50.000 made,

fiat 124 also listed as zastava 124 since it was assembled in zastava plants something like 5.000 made

btw, oily bits only, zastava florida is a illegitimate child of fiat tipo and pinninfarina with fiat's 1.3 engine from 128 and 1.4 from tipo, and yugo 45 is the strange combination of fiat 127 and 128, with fiat engines 903ccm, 1100ccm and 1300ccm. so if any of you out there need any parts for 127, 128 and simmilar models, feel free to contact me, i'll gladly help you get those much needed parts since they are widely available and very cheap in serbia.
example: front brake calipers for yugo, new, complete with pistons, are around 30e/pair and will fit almost any '70's and 80's fiat, 131 and 132 straight bolt on job.

there's a couple more like that one driving around belgrade. not my favourite though, i perfer styling of later versions. all in all, maybe 5-6 131 still being daily driven in belgrade. and it's a 2mil people city!

I hope the owners of the 131s near you are members here. ;D

I too prefer the later 131s. My favourite 131 is definately a series 2 Supermirafiori in either metallic green or blue with beige velour trim and the factory fitted steel sunroof.

i've spend the whole day there...
i've got no idea. haven't tried yet. ups, dhl, fedex all operate in serbia so there shouldn't be any problems. payments, on the other hand, might be difficult. maybe we could do a parts exchange? what exactly do you need? i've got a couple of 132's too that i'm stripping to bits... think you mentioned somewhere that you needed a grille and front bumper for 132 1800 gls?

Title: Re: Belgrade, Serbia, Fiat (copies) and the Eurovision!
Post by: mirafioriman on December 18, 2008, 08:51:07 PM
I have now got a grille and front bumper. Need some of the chrome wheel arch trims like the ones on the car in the scrapyard photos off the top of my head. I will have to have a look at my 132s and have a think.....

seems to be a solid example of it's kind although looks as it had been resprayed recently, chrome trim on front wheelarch is missing... i still perfer cars in their original condition so i can see what's wrong with them. i've seen too many cars where rust has been "repaired" with filler... this one was for sale for 700e and i went to see it. bloody disaster! at least 10kg of filler on it!

No, I can't claim to be a fan of the 132s. I always preferred the 131 in the same way I prefer the 124s to the 125s. I am obviously not 'posh' enough for the more luxurious Fiats! My comment of "Looks so lovely though!" was a general comment on the condition of an old car but not necessarily one I would like to own.

I think this is a joke  ;D ;D
Its a nitrous oxide (laughing gas) injection system that gives an engine an incredible burst of horsepower/acceleration ,but cannot be used for long on engines as the heat developed by using it and stress on crankshafts and rods pistons etc. is usually terminal for the engine itself -maybe 5 to 15 seconds at most  :) :)
The experience is like having a huge turbo boost over a short period of time  :)

Wow, nice Argenta and a series 2 which is very rare here in the UK. I know currently of only 2 series 2 in the UK, a 120 (2 litre) and a VX.

Post by: djape1977 on January 14, 2009, 11:20:59 AM
man, i would kill for VX engine... rare as bird's milk around here...
ordinary argenta's were common here, mk1 and mk2, only 2l though. never seen a 1.6! rust worm got most of them though...
i have a crazy idea to make a fiat 132 racecar for oldtimer races here, vx would be a nice thing to have...

here's another old fiat from belgrade.
btw, i blank out the licence plates in the pics if i didn't ask the owner of a car for permission to post image of a car.

there's quite a few oldtimers around here yet to be discovered, perhaps i might start something... like exporting them to EU?
i found a mint '68. 40.000km 125 special for and '70. 65.000km 850 sport coupe, only problem i have to decide which one to buy...

To get this topic back onto part of the original subject i.e. Eurovision? ;D? ;D it is unfortunate that it (the Eurovision of course) is a week earlier than usual this year which regrettably? means I won't be able to go. Shame as I would really like a good excuse to visit Moscow? :-[? I almost got to go to Moscow a few years ago for a Deep Forest concert but unfortunately that was cancelled so I? missed out then as well? :-[ But from what I've heard so far it's looking as if Eurovision 2010 will be back in Turkey so I may get to do my well overdue 131 parts purchase then? ;D Certainly if the Eurovision voting shifts from its usual political assemblage to voting on belly buttons and belly dancing then Hadise is certainly most likely to win? ;D :D

Looks like a modified 132 2500 Diesel with disc on the rear, a 850 Coup? and 125 in a project phase..
But still missing about two more cars on the parking  ;D
What is your plan with the 125?
The 132 D will be once the drift project as you said earlier or another one to source?

Title: Re: Belgrade, Serbia, Fiat (copies) and the Eurovision!
Post by: djape1977 on August 01, 2009, 10:53:21 AM
well, lada is a daily driver, i use it for my work, 131 is in a bodyshop right now, 125 is to be broken up for parts, there's 2 more 132's on the way, red one 2000 that i still drive sometimes and a dark blue 2000 with dead engine. 850 is to be restored... i got myself projects list for next 10 years.

since there'll be some more 132's around, i'll have to decide which is worth restoring and which is to be gutted and reborn as a race car.

125 is a project that a kid i know started but when he ran out of money he sold it to me for 120e. i already sold one rear door and a bootlid and made 70e so it's gonna pay for itself. engine is going into my 131 since it's a 1608ccm twincam, rear axle with discs is going probably into 131 too, a gearbox is to be sold off for super 7 project of a friend of mine, interior is to be sold to another 125 fan since it's in excellent nick...

also missing is from that pic is my 1970 ford 17m hardtop coupe, which is in a garage, in my summer house, some 100km away

Oh well, that?s a lot of plans, but as you say at least you won?t be bored for next 10 years  ;)
I?m looking forward to the 132 drift project. I never saw a raced 132, just a few Argentas on photos from racetrack.
The uprgrade of your 131 sounds also fine, we both will have similar equiped machines again, upgraded CL?s ;D

Can we see a pic of the Ford 17m?

Nice colour and I also particularly like the wheels ;D

those are widened steel wheels. i don't know from which car they are originally.
something like this: first you cut the standard steel wheel in two, than you add a ring of desired width in the middle, then you weld it back together. i have such wheels on my lada, only i couldn't be bothered to put some filler on and to paint them

Over here they call them 'banded steels'. Would be interesting to find out what the centres originally came from though as I don't recognise them.

i remember lads doing this to mini wheels years ago, wouldnt like to be hitting a ton on the motorway with those on though, i see you like your beer djape? yum yum!

Title: Re: Belgrade, Serbia, Fiat (copies) and the Eurovision!
Post by: djape1977 on November 03, 2009, 09:18:26 PM
frankly, i've had those wheels on for about 5-6yrs now, no problems whatsoever. i even once hit a stormdrain without a covering grill, i tore of half of my front suspension but wheel survived.
(http://img503.imageshack.us/img503/8802/image000w.jpg) (http://img503.imageshack.us/my.php?image=image000w.jpg)
(http://img338.imageshack.us/img338/6995/image002w.jpg) (http://img338.imageshack.us/my.php?image=image002w.jpg)
so, definately, if the welding is done properly, they're as reliable as factory wheels. tyres are tubeless and there's no more than 50grams of balancing weights on any single wheel.

beer? sure! when i was younger i was a BIG fan of any sort of beer, now i only drink ocassionally...

when i was younger i loved beer & now i am older i still love it! lol,
if the wheels are done properly on a lathe i suppose they would be very strong, if you had to have hit the drain with a alloy wheel the wheel wouldnt have survived.

Title: Re: Belgrade, Serbia, Fiat (copies) and the Eurovision!
Post by: djape1977 on November 03, 2009, 09:33:36 PM
well, knowing the conditions on the roads i drive on daily, and that any sort of suprise is possible, i opted for steel wheels because they're much stronger and can be repaired when damaged, unlike alloys.
this particular accident tore the silent blocks, cracked the lower suspension arm and tore out the top shock absorber mount. imagine what would be the condition of the wheel if it was an alloy...

the car is all messed up so i didn't buy it whole but i bought the compressor with all the bits needed to fit it onto another engine and i bought the rear axle and gearbox. expect to see a fiat 132 volumex soon!!!

Title: Re: Belgrade, Serbia, Fiat (copies) and the Eurovision!
Post by: Testament on May 15, 2010, 04:49:27 AM
why not the whole motor? it should have the low compression pistons and head with bigger ports and sodium cooled exhaust valves.

Title: Re: Belgrade, Serbia, Fiat (copies) and the Eurovision!
Post by: djape1977 on May 15, 2010, 06:25:25 AM
because it's not the original head on it. that's probably one of reasons the engine is screwed up. probably the pistons too

this is what we in serbia like to call " tuning - smiling "
seems like a decent example under that hideous paint. owner wants 2,5k euro for it. fat chance! it will go for around 1k in the end

That is indeed a nice Argenta. The early cars seemed to have much nicer interior trim. I'd much rather have those seats in my Argenta than the ones I currently have ;)

Ity should be nice however looking at the price.......

Title: Re: Belgrade, Serbia, Fiat (copies) and the Eurovision!
Post by: djape1977 on June 29, 2010, 07:05:44 PM
those aren't the seats you see, those are custom made seat covers. seats underneath are usual argenta seats, although in excellent condition as the rest of the car.
price is, ofcourse, overly entusiastic. i believe it will be sold for around 2.000e in the end, although a lot of time may pass untill the owner realises the true value.
the red 132 is for sale at 1.200e cash. been there, seen it, leaves a lot to be desired. i think that more realistic price would be around 800e

Title: Re: Belgrade, Serbia, Fiat (copies) and the Eurovision!
Post by: kev131 on June 29, 2010, 08:27:42 PM
Very nice Argenta and in a rare colour - The darker colours suit the car better I think.

Yes the price is stratospheric especially at that mileage. :o

Even at ?2000 it will struggle I think - One of the most unloved cars ever, not to mind in the Fiat range - I wonder how many sold..? ???

Title: Re: Belgrade, Serbia, Fiat (copies) and the Eurovision!
Post by: djape1977 on June 29, 2010, 08:56:29 PM
1. a lot of big fiats in serbia are that colour. at least a half of all 131, 132 and argentas were dark blue.
i now have a dark blue 131 and 132 and i've had two more 132s in the same colour. guess it was because in old communist regime black was reserved for mercedes cars of politbiro and goverment, dark blue was almost exclusive for executive cars of big state owned companies and other colours were for the populus... later, as those cars got old, most of them were sold to private ownership. dark blue 132 is still a status simbol for most of "older" people in all ex yugoslavian states.

2. knowing the local market, 2000 will be about the right price

3.. dunno how many argentas were made. far less than 132s definately.

as far as i know, 132 was actually a very sucsessful model. it was produced in

italy - about 290.000made

yugoslavia - around 25.000 made, mk2 1800gls only

poland - as far as i know, 1600 and 1800 mk2  - don't know how many made

south korea - made by KIA motor company. didn't manage to find anything more than the info that it was made with 1300ccm engine from '74. to '86. perhaps on websites written in corean more info could be found?

Wellllll  :)

(1) Not having been to Eastern Europe (at least not further east than Prague in 2003) I can't comment about the most popular colours in that part of the world, only for Western Europe to a degree ...and I guess from looking at "for sale" adverts ....and on that experience, it's a rare colour to me. ;) In fact, I'm struggling to remember EVER seeing one in that colour. Interesting that this colour is popular in your part of the world for the reasons you mention - I think Lady Di used to drive Audi convertibles in the same colour and as a result the colour improved in popularity in the UK for a while.

(2) Value - Again my estimate is based more towards Western Europe and really, when these cars come up for sale at any price, they seem to be available for ever! There is a lovely gun metal Argenta SX Volumex for sale is Italy for a negotiable ?2k for some time now.

(3) Regarding volumes I stumbled across the attached article today (which is the reason why I have replied to this thread - not a Saturday night argumentitive streak... although I am disappointed that my sweepstake world cup team (Paraguay) has just lost to Spain)!! >:( According to this article 61,000 Argentas were made, a quarter of the petrol models in the 1600cc variant - Interesting stats don't you think..? :)

Yes although looking at the production dates on this article (05/81 to 06/82) it would seem to indicate series 1 production numbers only..? ??? Do you know when the S2 was launched...?

Post by: mirafioriman on July 03, 2010, 09:26:45 PM
Off the top of my head no but I'm guessing 83 or even 84. Def after 82 though so I would agree this figure is for series 1 cars only.

yeah, i know. i really can't understand people leaving their cars standing in the field for 10 yrs!!!

when a friend told me about this car my heart started pomping a bit faster. i was hoping it could still be saved. when i saw it i was discusted. you know that sickening feeling in the gut, one that is too often brought by dissapointment.

i'll see what's the condition from underneath the car, but it's probably completely rusted thru. if that is the case, only way wil be to strip everything that can be used and scrap the rest.
if rust from underneath is not so bad, maybe there's still hope!

as it turns out, car is for sale. been to see it today. it was imported from switzerland in 2000, owner claims that in original swiss papers it was 125tc, current serbian papers also say it's 125tc. he's looking to get around 3,5k euro for it. front optional recaro bucket seats, ventilated discs, diferent gearbox than on 105tc, abarth cast on single carb inlet manifold...

A new one to me, perhaps this is along similar lines to the Swiss spec Integrales with the the Evo shells but running 8 valve engines.

Did the Swiss have strict emissions laws in the 80's? .... that would explain the single carb perhaps ???

...and to me...I was almost certain that Abarth 125TC = SI Ritmo and 130TC = S2 Ritmo...no ifs buts or maybes....but possibly the Swiss market was slightly different - After all they are known for liking to go their own way...! ;)

...from memories of my Dad's S1 2000 carb model, that model definitely needed some anti-roll measures - I don't think I've driven a car since that felt more top heavy!  ;D

Did you see this car for sale...? I was seriously interested (price, condition, provenance & same colour as Dad's old car) but it sold within 24 hours apparently. Seller regrets not asking for more.

What I really want is a 132 2000 but I am having no luck finding the right car..so I began looking at Argentas and the more I look at them the more I'm getting interested. I'm still only at the stage where I would buy the very best for a bargain and ?4k is not a bargain for an Argenta just yet. Whereabouts is it and was it a mafia car in a past life? I see what looks like uzi damage!!  ;)

Thanks for reminding me about the car though. Did you drive it and if yes.... any comments?

Title: Re: Belgrade, Serbia, Fiat (copies) and the Eurovision!
Post by: djape1977 on August 22, 2010, 03:20:29 PM
dark blue argenta is in central serbia, around 100km from me. that small damage on right rear side is all damage there is. it was made by a bicycle standing next to it in a garage where it was kept. registered every year since new, driven rarely, 4-5k kms per year.  owned by a village veterinarian as a third car, weddings, funerals and vacations only stuff. seat covers were custom made when car was brand new so underneath you have a brand new seats.
i drove it and it's mostly ok. rear brakes seem a bit vague, probably due to lack of excersise, or i got used to driving cars with all wheel disc brakes? tyres are old, not worn but too old and rubber seems to have gotten hard so it spins rear wheels too easy. would benefit from new tyres and rear brakes overhaul. engine seems a bit lazy with usual oil leak from cam covers. probably just needs to be driven hard for a while to blow out the grit from pistons.
i don't claim it to be perfect but it's damn near perfect, or to be honest, as perfect as it gets for a car that old. on the other hand, if seller wants to get 4k for it, he could spend 500e for a set of new tyres and brakes overhaul

Even though I'm not a fun of the 132 why do I think that the Argenta is a restyled 132 after all?

Title: Re: Belgrade, Serbia, Fiat (copies) and the Eurovision!
Post by: djape1977 on August 22, 2010, 07:55:50 PM
because it is.
95% of mechanical bits are identical and are straight fit from one to another. floor and chasis are the same, front and rear suspension are 90% same, doors from argenta fit 132 and vice versa, i think that front and rear windscreenas are the same but i haven't tried myself

nice one pal.

workhorse as usual, this time the airconditioner installers...

believe it or not, there actually was air conditioning available for lada in some markets such as middle east and australia. russians ordered from hitachi to make one to fit lada and they imported them from japan and installed them in lada factory in Tolyati.

How DO you find these cars Djape - Every time it must be exciting - I know it would be for me. That green 131 is a nice find - I presume the elderly couple are the owners - Lovely story.

I just missed out on a beautiful silver 132 with 29000kms and 1 owner - Looks like it had seat covers from new. E4500 negotiable.  :(

pretty much everyone interested in old cars in serbia has heard about me and my hunt for fiats. so every now and then i get a call from someone with offers to buy cars, or from someone who knows someone who has old fiat in the back yard... that's how i heard of this green 131. unfortnately, not my cup of tea. by the way, old woman is about 90yrs old and man is her son, 65-70yrs. he is a first and only owner. car has been repainted once, about 20 years ago, before bodywork started rusting away...

olive 132 is a result of my ad in local classifields stating fiat 124, 125, 131, 132, argenta parts for sale. fine old chap phoned me couple days ago asking if i had some suspension bits for 132. one thing led to another and we met, he got what he wanted and i got the story and these pics.
he is 60yrs old university professor, and this 132 is his first and only car. 56.000km on the clock is original mileage. he's not much of a driver in his own words. he had crashed right front door one day coming out of his garage and you can see less than perfect repair on that panel. other than that, car is almost flawless. seat covers from new of course...

also, i saw another 132 today... rusty old diesel. so rotten that i didn't even take pictures...

i don't think you'll be getting those dave, the car is original, complete and immaculate and in hands of true entusiast. it won't be coming up for sale anytime soon.
i do have in mind your quest and if i come by such a set i will contact you. i hope that you equally keep in mind my quest for immaculate 132 doorcards and front spoiler from 131 sport

Very few 132s crop up over here but if I see any decent doorcards I will let you know.
