No it can't. It's meant to be used with a standard 131 distributor with contact points.

The 131 electronic distributor and electronic module will produce a much better spark than you'll get with this Abarth unit. Just mount the Abarth unit in your engine compartment so it looks nice and leave the 131 Sport electronic distributor and control unit in place.

Put in a mapable ignition system and get rid of the mechanical advance etc....

Thotos,

Thank you.

I agree that it looks really Abarth good but I will follow your advise and stay with the 131 electronic ignition I currently have. I am glad my electronic ignition is superior ( I will go for performance  not looks)

You just saved me some money. Thanks again.

Is there any description of such systems anywhere on the net I could red more a about ...

Parrish (http://131mirafiori.com/smf/index.php?action=profile;u=5) is in the process of fitting an OMEX ignition system to his 131. See his post at http://131mirafiori.com/smf/index.php?topic=2705.msg18946#msg18946 (http://131mirafiori.com/smf/index.php?topic=2705.msg18946#msg18946) and contact him for details or have a look at http://www.needforspeed.co.uk/htmlpages/techOMS01.htm (http://www.needforspeed.co.uk/htmlpages/techOMS01.htm) for details.

Thotos,

Thanks, I posted few question to Parrish as his experience would be crucial in my decision to go for the same.

Very interesting reading.

Even points are good but it is setting them that people have trouble with as my little 124 1600 is still on the original point setup and it is well able to sit on the arse of a 131 sport with electronic ignition but MSD do a very simple and good system....

Even points are good but it is setting them that people have trouble with

There's no magic to setting up points and a points system can work well. But points will need regular adjustment to work at their best. They are also limited to the amount of current they can 'sink' therefore limited to the strength of the spark they will produce and as they get pitted the situation gets worse. They are also limited to how fast you can open and close so about 8000 RPM on a four cylinder engine is their limit. Once you have more than 4 cylinders things get worse and manufacturers had to use twin point setups to get them to work reliably at higher RPMs.   But a well set up points system will produce sufficient spark to run a twin cam just as well as the 131 Sport electronic system but the points will need to be replaced and adjusted many times before the 131 Sport's magnetic pickup will need to be replaced.

Fitting points is part of a cars maintenance and even when they do give trouble you can generally engineer them to get going again but with the pickup or module in Electronic you best hope you have good reception  ::) but I do have an older Fiat that had a factory upgrade to electronic to let it rev to 10500rpm as the points were limited to 8500 rpm but how often would you drive to these limits.... but as they say keep it simple and less can go wrong  ;D ;D ;D

Eugene dont be agreeing with me or they might all think we are friends  ;D ;D ;D but if they had put points on the 999cc uno they would have given no trouble at all....

You can plow a paddock with the torque of a 2 litre but a 1.6 wouldn't pull a sailor off your sister!
