Title: Advice !
Post by: finnie on March 03, 2014, 10:21:47 PM
Hi All
Was given a 2 litre engine a couple a weeks ago and was told it had 65K miles on it and looking at it I believe it.
Took head off today to clean it up and it`s very clean ,but noticed that 3 out of 4 pistons "rock" a little bit from side to side ! Surely that means rings are stucked. Now would it not be sensible to put new rings in it now that`s in pieces ?
Thanks

The old chestnut again. What do you do? Once you start you usually end up doing a full rebuild.

The other alternative although it's too late now is to change the oil and cam belt, make sure it turns over freely and start it up. If it start, runs well and seems a good runner just use it. If there are problems then you fix them.

The latter is the approach I usually take.....

Engines out........
Remove the sump 20min
Remove the pump 5min
undo one big end cap ......pop the piston out 10min......there done.
Check the big end bearings on condition and crank as the others come out.
If bearings are good, you can re-use or slip new ones in.
Do not disturb bearings and remove from rod or cap if you re-use.
Re hone pots and slip new rings on.(check your piston size)to get correct rings.
Don't forget ring gap is ok.
You can do this with leaving front pully on and flywheel.
I think a little rock is fine unless its a race engine.
If i lived nearby,i would do it for you in afew hours, but you have to scrap
the gaskets  ;D
If you do this, you could fit a little washer under releaf valve
spring on pump for that little better pressure(suggest you give to someone that
knows,if you don't).Will not hurt.
Not a full re-build,but a wise thing maybe while out.
Good luck.

What we did with last couple of engines was
polish crank new bearings, test pump, hone block, new rings, new seals & gaskets,
skim the head reface & grind in valves, set the valve clearences (shims) new ribe head bolts, new water pump & thermostat ;)

Thanks guys
Will take out pistons and put in new rings at least . Check the rest  ;) and what also came with engine was a brand new
oil pump NOS fiat stamp and fiat box - would that need the washer trick as well ? The head will go to machine shop for
overhaul because I can  ;)

Just had a thought being bored at work  ;D What we did in the 70`s and early 80`s was a lot easier and cheaper  :D

Clean up valves get the paste out and the stick and get rolling :D hot pressure wash the head new stem seals and Bob`s
your uncle LOL

The machine shop refaces the valves & grinds them in now so no need for that torture ;)

Hi All
Just taken the flywheel off to send it away for skimming and found out that bearing for gearbox shaft is not working !
A quick measure says OD 35mm ID 14.7mm width 14mm is that correct ? shaft on gearbox is ID 15mm
Anybody got the correct size ?
Thanks

Do you mean the bearing at the back of the crank where the gearbox shaft end goes into?

Mate, I am having trouble figuring out that cable linkage set up on the front carb. I am sitting here with a Dellorto DHLA 40 & the cable pull would have to be clockwise rotation on shaft as you look at the carb from the front of the engine.
Unless that is corrected lower on that linkage where the photo does'nt show ?
Looks like a well made job though & I am interested where to get one.
O.

I just bought this one

Thanks for the reply finnie.
The set up shown on the E Bay link is actually different to the one you have & the cable pull comes in from the back of the rear carb & not across the engine & cam box like yours. Had you got this one in the link then your cable problem ( with the angle it goes down over the cam box) would be solved.
I think I am a gonna get me one of those.
O.

This is the new cable system not the best quality and think  ill reverse it so it pulls from the front

From memory the block fits onto the top of the accelerator pedal. You'll probably have to cut the top of the pedal to get the block into place.

Hi All
It`s nearly ready but just to check carb jets etc.

This is my current setup and was told they came from 2L engine:

32 Chokes
35 accelerator pump jets
155 Main jets
210 Aircorrectors
7772.10 emulsion tubes
60 Idle jets
7848.3 Aux venturis

What do other people have ? I was thinking to try it out first and then maybe a rolling road will tell me differently
Any advice would be appreciated
Thanks

I got mine from Matt at Eurocarb can't remember the numbers now though. A rolling road session is always a good move. No point spending lots of money building an engine and then not getting the best from it.
