Hi

Could someone please tell how the front windsheild was put in on 1978 131 series 1. Was it glued in place and then the chrome was added or was there a gasket used between the glass and the chrome.

I have a water leak in the middle  of the windsheild and would like to know how to fix it.

As far as I know all 131 screens, front and rear are fitted with a rubber gasket.

I believe there are different gaskets, some for chrome and some without. It depended on model.

You say in the middle...does it leak at the top or at the bottom?
does the leaking water inside appear between windshield and gasket or between gasket and chassis?

The water is coming in on the top about where the rear view mirror is. When it is rainning light you can see drips on the inside of the glass, when it is raining hard water just pours out. At first i thought to remove the windsheild and replace the gasket but new gaskets are not available for windsheilds that have chrome surrounds. Could I remove the winsheild and use silcone around the gasket?

it is worth a try but mostly this is a temporary fix.
make sure both the windscreen edge and the inside of the casket are spotless
(dirt can cause a leak as well over the years)

Have you got a toughened windscreen and somebody has fitted a gasket for a laminated screen ?
The reason I ask is that the old toughened windscreens aren't as thick as the laminated ones and although they will fit into the laminated gasket they won't be as tight a fit, causing it to leak.

I pulled off the chrome today and there is a break in the gasket, about 3mm not very big, but enough to let water get under the winsheild. Now the question is do I glue back together and the a layer of silcone or get rid of the chrome use the black sport rubber which is still available.

if it is only one crack, I think you can fix it with the right sealant
we used to use Sikaflex ( but I am not sure if it still excits...)
I will ask a friend who is in this windscreen business next week.
