Title: Wiring after market rev counter
Post by: Crazypierre on March 17, 2020, 08:53:05 AM
Hi Guys,

Hope you're all keeping well in these difficult times.
I've got a stand-alone rev counter I'm planning to wire up to my 1979 131 1300CL
Of the 4 wires, one needs to go to "an ignition" circuit, one to a lighting circuit (then one to the distributor and one to earth).

Where is the best place to connect the ignition wire to?  And the lighting one?

What colour wires do I look for under the steering cowling?  Or is there an easier place to connect these wires to?

(Hate electrics!)

Thanks
Pete

Ignition wire is to give power to the rev counter. This should be connected to anything that goes 'live' once the ignition is on. if it's a long wire, you can run it with the distributor wire all the way to the coil. Ignition will go on the coil + and the distributor will go on the coil -

Lighting circuit wire is there to turn on the illumination when the lights are on. Connect it to any light source near the rev counter or the back of the light switch.

Earth simply connects anywhere on the body of the car.

Hi Theo,
Sounds simple enough- thanks very much!
With the lighting wire, so you think I could splice it into the live wire that goes to one of the headlamps?  (Seeing as the coil is close to the n/s headlamp I could neatly run all four wires together all the way there.)
Regards

Hello Peter. Not the headlamp but sidelight wire. You want the rev counter illumination to be on when the other instrument lights are on and they come on with the sidelights.

Oh yes, you're right.
Will give it a go this weekend.
Thanks

Hi Theo,
Thanks to your help, my rev counter is all connected up and works a treat.   All wiring neat and tidy under the bonnet with the light pick up on the n/s side lamp a few inches away from the coil.  I fed the four wires (nicely taped up to look like the rest of the loom) through a rubber blanking plate in the firewall which had a handy hole in it already!
See pictures and check out the mileage while you're there!
Thanks very much.
Pete
