Title: Starter motor compatability
Post by: Crazypierre on April 08, 2014, 09:33:27 PM
Gents
Do you know if the starter motor off a 1600cc or 2000 cc 131 will fit a 1300cc Overhead valve engine?
Cheers
Pete

Which side is the starter on the OHV engine?

OHV engines have them on the right side, opposite to DOHC engines.

Hi, that's correct. It's on the right under the exhaust manifold.

I have been told that the 1300cc OHV engine has a lucas LRS 180 starter fitted (same as Fiat 124).

Can anyone confirm that?

Cheers
Pete

Hi Pete,

I'd say to be extremely careful when selecting a replacement starter for your 1300 131. ALL of the twin cams, regardless of their application, (124, 125, 131, 132, Argenta, etc) will all have the starter on the wrong side and therefore will not be suitable for your 1300 OHV.

The '124' that you are being told will be the same as your 1300 is in fact the 1200 Saloon model and not the twin cam versions.

The Lucas LRS 180 is only suitable for the 1300 131, as it is not powerful enough for the 1600 OHV application. However, I would say that the 1600 OHV starter would still fit and have more than enough power, for the 1300 OHV.

(1300 OHV starter rated output is 0.8kW where as 1600 OHV starter is rated at 1.3kW).

Can you not have your starter repaired? I regularly use Burghfield Starter and Alternator Centre near Reading for all of my electrical needs as they can refurbish and repair using OEM parts.

Hi
Thanks for the information.
I guess I could remove the starter and get it refurbished as you suggest. I was hoping to get a replacement and get my garage to swap them over when they do the MOT. (Getting too old to crawl under car engines! Although I rebuilt the starter on my 128 back in the 80s when I was young and fit!)
Cheers

The nose of the starter that bolts up to the bellhousing is a mirror image between twincam and OHV motors. If you can find the same starter, even if it's from the opposite side the parts can be swapped over.

Thanks. Yes, I'd seen this one on ebay. I asked the guy if he has one for a 1300.
