Title: Wanted - front near side indicator/side light unit
Post by: simon131 on July 23, 2007, 09:45:45 AM
Hi Guys,

Urgently required - a front near side combined side light and indicator unit for a series 2 or 3 131. MUST be in good usable condition, without any rusted metal contacts or threads.

I'll consider buying the body only, without the lens.

Needed to get my series 3 1600CL back on the road.

Thanks

Simon131

Best regards

Hi Tomasz,

Thanks for the very quick response.

I'm looking for the genuine article at the moment. But if I have no luck I'll let you know.

Thanks again.

There was a pair of new ones on UK-eBay recently (I was thinking of buying them) but not there now. Might be back soon if they didn't sell.

I have several old (but hopefully good) ones so I may be able to sort one out for you. Incidentally, you can adapt the body of an offside to nearside fitting. I've done that before!

The ones on Tomasz's car look quite original to me!

Hi Simon,

I have a couple of old units that you can have if you want, I no longer need them as I bought some 127 units for the front spoiler.

The only thing wrong with them is that the little plastic prongs at the back are broken....does that make a difference to the fitting ?? and they have no lense covers.

Sorry to be pedantic but are you sure that they are the same thing Theo? Its just that I didn't realise that a Maserati shared the same lights as a 131.

If they are, (and I realise that I should bow to your wealth of Maserati knowledge - on the basis that I have none!) then as Dave says, problem solved!

The maqserati ones look like FSO Polonez lights and it is a bit different than 131.

For sure, Maserati Biturbo indicator/sidelights are exactly the same as Fiat 131 (or 127 etc). I know as I have taken one off my 131 and fitted it to the Maserati to get it through an MOT!

The units sold by Eurospares are copies (with metal screws for the lens) and I believe they are made in India.

I had a set of 131 racing lights with bumper and it was different than FSO Polonez that i have on my car(but still simmilar and good as replacements). And the Maserati ones look just like the FSO Polonez. Maybe there are some more versions of those lights for 131?

The lights sold by Eurospares are certainly not original. I suspect they are from India as I know that they've had some lights for Lamborghinis remanufactured in India. It could well bee that the ones they are selling for the Biturbo are FSO Polonez items which, as you say, they fit. But original Maserati Biturbo units are identical (and of course Italian made) to the units fitted to Fiat 131, 127, some 128s and early Lamborghini Diablos.

The units shown above by Mick131 do not look like 131 units though as they have clip-in lugs which 131 units (and Biturbo units) do not have as they screw into the bumper.  Maybe the Mick131 ones above were fitted to Series 3 131s?

The units in the photos above with clips are not 131 series 3 units. The units for the series 2 and 3 are identical as I took the unit out of my series 3 CL to put into my Racing. (Sound familiar? ;D)

I have now purchased a unit from Eurospares outside of ebay (as this unit had already been sold) so we'll see when it arrives whether it is the correct one. If not I've only lost ?25 but if it is then we appear to have found a supplier of cheap front combo-light units 8) ;D, something that is always rusting out on UK 131s!

I'll keep you all posted.

Incidentally, a second-hand Italian unit went on ebay recently and sold for ?28 plus postage.? :o

The Eurospares light fitting was delivered by 'Signed for' post yesterday morning - and very well packed too, plenty of bubble wrap! ;D

I have not yet tried to fit it - was building a 12 foot trampoline and safety net when I got in from work - in the rain! >:( but on first inspection the fitting looks extremely cheaply made, especially the bulb-holder 'body' and there are no markings on it that give away it's country of origin/manufacture.

I haven't yet compared it with the 'Italian' unit either to check sizes etc but the one design mod that I fully agree with is the long metal screw that is supplied to hold both the lens on (acheived by a stubby plastic screw on the Italian made units, which screws into a metal thread and becomes brittle after a few years - usually snapping off!) and hold the whole fitting to the bumper. I only hope it's long enough to reach!? :o

the long metal screw that is supplied to hold both the lens on .....  and hold the whole fitting to the bumper.

That can't be right otherwise you'll need to remove the whole fitting to replace the bulbs. The fitting is held in the bumper with little nuts which are not captive so you need to get behind the bumper to fit or remove the unit. With certain 131 models the bumper needs to be removed to get behind it and you don't want to do that every time you have to change a bulb.

I have done this mod on my car to re-condition a damaged light unit. I used stainless fixings to make them easier to undo in the future. On my 131 at least you can get your hand up the back of the bumper to reach the nut. In my experience if you use quality bulbs, they last for ages so you should not need to change them very often.

Thanks guys for all of your suggestions.

I fitted the Eurospares unit on Saturday morning and can confirm that it is indeed a cheap and nasty replacement for the Italian made unit - but at least I now have a fitting that will pass the MoT!

It took me over an hour to fit the unit and get both lamps to work without some sort of failure. The bulb holders (half metal, half formed out of the body of the fitting) were poorly moulded, and the bulbs were continually pushed out by the over zealous spring!!

Theo, you are quite correct in your assumption that the fitting has to be totally removed to get to the bulbs. This is OK on the CL where the bumper stands proud of the bodywork enough to get your hand behind it to do up the nut, but isn't so good if the bumpers are plastic and have a tighter fit to the bodywork.

I doubt that I'll buy from Eurospares again as the quality of the product is poor. I'd have been extremely disappointed if I'd paid the ?42.50 plus postage plus VAT that they quote on their website.
