Title: Irish Fiat 131 event incl GKMR09
Post by: kev131 on April 20, 2009, 05:55:47 PM
Hi all

For many reasons the hoped for contingent of travelling 131 owners from Ireland to Turin for 3MA09 has not materialised.

However many people have been asking about an event similar to 3MA07 where a grand total of 17 Fiat 131s attended. Who amongst us who was there, can forget the the following sights....?? ;D

With the increase in numbers of our favourite car in the country we should be able to better this record while renewing friendships and enjoying a relaxing weekend amongst some of Ireland's breathtaking scenery.

Dates: 25/26/27th September 2009

Hotel: The proposed event is to be held in the same hotel again (The Killarney Heights). Contact telephone number: 00 353 64 66 31158

http://www.killarneyheights.ie/

Costs: The same deal from 2007 is being offered. This is Dinner bed & Breakfast for ?55 per person per night with no single supplement.

Booking: Each attendee should book directly with the hotel stating which nights you are staying and quoting Fiat Classic Car Event. Try to speak with Mary in bookings although anyone in reception should be able to help. 25 rooms have been provisionally booked in our name and anyone wishing to attend should book early.

Parking: Special parking arrangements will be made available again where we will have the area directly in front of the hotel rerserved for our use.

Trips: Nothing planned yet but I'm thinking of the Dingle peninsula for either Saturday or Sunday with the Beara peninsula (including the famous Healy Pass where we had so much RWD fun the last time) for the alternate day.

Other Classic Fiats: The event is also open to other Classic Fiat owners which I think will put pressure on rooms at the Heights. In fact last time some late bookers ended up staying at another hotel which affected the social evenings (drinking/driving).

Weather: Working on that one but it cannot possibly be wetter than GKMR08! ;D

I hope that's everything that people need to know. If anyone has any suggestions on activities or wants to volunteer some entertainment for Friday/Saturday/Sunday nights please step forward...! ;)

I've texted most of the people for whom I have numbers and if you are registered on this forum please respond to this thread to express your interest and when you have booked your accomadation. In fact while writing this, we have 6 text confirmed attendees in just the last 30 minutes. (apologies if I missed anyone out and please spread the word)

Thanks? :)

PS - Our UK/European 131 friends are especially welcome too (Simon/Theo/Albert/Rene/Jean/Andy etc etc.) ;D

The Carrick Clan will be there, just try to keep us away!!

If its half as good as 2007 it will be well worth it!

Well if the Carrick's are going to be there that's it! I'm not! ;) ;D Only joking guys. :D :D :D It was great crack with all of the Irish lads and lasses 8) would love to do it all again.

Kev, will try to be there as it was a truly memorable event in 07. I think my car was put thru it's paces many a time on those great Kerry and Clare roads!! There are certainly a few more dents in the floor than there were before we started the weekend! ;D

Should be good. I hope to be there. ;)

Just to update on this...

There are 11 rooms booked with 9 still available.

The hotel's telephone number has changed to 00 353 064 66 311 58

The event is over 3 nights and the bookings are evenly split between people staying Fri/Sat and those staying Fri/Sat/Sun. To get the most benefit I would urge people to stay the 3 nights as the drives on Sat and Sun are quite long, the main one on the Sunday being over the Healy pass again!!!? ;D

On previous occasions the route had been driven before and a route map prepared. There did not appear to be a lot of demand for this on previous occasions so closer to the date, I will plot the route on a map with meeting points and participants can either travel together in convoy or make their own way to each one - It is probably a lot simpler to manage like that rather than trying to keep a long line of cars together.

Also there did not seem to be a lot of demand for car stickers to record the event so I won't bother with those this year either. Of course the upside is that I won't need to ask for a contribution towards expenses like last year.. :)

So if you are planning to attend please go ahead and book your room before the supply dries up. ;)

Hey Guys!!!

Just to let you all know that we won't be down. :(  Willie has been in and out of hospital over the last few months and is now booked in for another operation in mid September.  We are all really gutted, but if we get Willie sorted out this year, we can attend more outing next year.

Have a pint for Willie and a shot for me!!! ;D

Hope you all have a ball.

Tracy

I'm thinking I will try and get over to this event  (I'm over in Yorkshire from NZ for a few months) - it looks like I can get very cheap flights leeds-dublin but not to cork. I could get a rental car but I'm thinking it's not going to hurt to ask if anyone would be going to this from dublin and possibly have a spare seat in their 131? ::)

Hi Kev I know a really nice restraunt on the Slea Head run
which has a very large car park and a great view of the Atlantic
I will try to contact them and check if they will be open on that
weekend as it is only 10 / 15 min into the drive after Dingle town
keep up the good work    Sean

Nice 1 Sean - Let us know how you get on. We can ring them on Friday night if they need to know numbers beforehand and it would be even nicer if they could reserve a parking spot for all the Fiats - The Toyotas can park anywhere!!  ;)

We might not be so lucky the following day on the Beara peninsula - It was quite diffiuclt to get a suitable restaurant in 2007 in Castletown. (that was a Monday).

Testament - I'm not aware of any confirmed 131 owning attendees from Dublin attending yet so it might be a false hope to wait for an offer of a lift, unfortunately (although I could be wrong). In any event, I suspect that most cars will be 2 up and travelling in the back seat for extended periods in a 131, especially a 2 door, might not be the best idea on western Irish roads.  ::)

You are more than welcome to come along though - Don't forget to book the hotel.  :)

Update:

There has been a rush of bookings in the last week and there are now 18 rooms booked. That leaves 2 available from the original reservation. To this, should be added the attendees who live locally and therefore have no need for hotel accomadation.

For people in that state and who would like to eat with the group, please let me know & I'll get a rate agreed with the hotel.

I've contacted the editor of the Irish Vintage Scene magazine and they have asked a local reporter to attend either on Fri or Sat to cover the event.

Thanks for arranging Sat lunch Sean - Do you have the name of the establishment and telephone number please? They might do us a group deal.  ;)

Looks like we will have a similar sized event to '07 & '08 at least, if not bigger!!  :)

Hi Mr O Beirn  ;)

The usual crew can't make it unfortunately... but Mark tells me that there could be one or two 131s from Wales - The new owner of Simon's silver Racing and pal.  :)

I hope they makes it because I'm keen to see a LHD conversion!  ;)

Greetings from North Conway in the White Mountains (Maine).  :)

I think Bren is right with the 18 rooms (could be 19) but this does not take into account people living locally who will be attending but not staying in the hotel. I've advised the hotel to plan for 10 extra people to be dining with us (over and above the number of people booked to stay). I don't have exact total numbers and am awaiting texts from people making last minute decisions, but I would not be surprised if the event was not as well attended as Leenane last year, if not better.  ;)

Great to hear that we have an attendee from Wales but shame it's not the silver Racing!!  :)

Now all we need is the weather!  ;)

I've been to North Conway too Kev (which I think you'll find is actually in New Hampshire) ...watch out for the bears around the dumpsters! And I'm being serious!! :o Beautiful place - lots of enclosed bridges and wonderful mountains.

Not that far from Mount Washington there if I remember correctly. Didn't get to see it myself as the pass was still closed due the snow (I went in March (a few years ago now) and there was still lots of snow and ice about). There was a 124 Spider 'grave yard' at Don Black's place not far from Nth Conway on the main highway north to the Canadian border (I think ;D). That was the only place I saw any Italian car when I was there.

There's an old diesel Railroad Engine at the top of the town isn't there? I'm sure I took a few pics of that.

Enjoy the rest of your trip. ;)

Bummer - Right again - I've checked...but only just apparently ...abt 2 miles! ::)

Thanks for the bear advice - It's great to see a new part of the states but boy is everything commercialised...you gotta pay for everything..even poor service!  :o ::)

We're off to the W/Mntns now and from there to Vermont and Lake Placid afterwards. Hopefully the hotels will all have internet access cos it's nice to keep up with the 131 world.  :)

I've had an e-mail from the Irish Vintage Scene journalist who plans to cover the event that he expects to come along on Sat morning and will travel some of the way to Dingle with us. So, for anyone hoping to get a pic of their Fiat in the magazine, early morning polishing starts at 6.0am!  ;)

I'm advised that the area immediately in front of the hotel will be cordoned off, (probably with cones and tape) for the exclusive use of our group, so if you arrive early please reverse park in front of the hotel (like in 2007) to get the best line up for photos (as well as overnight security).

If we are lucky, the publicity from the magazine will further strengthen the numbers of classic Fiat owners who will to attend these events in the future.  :)

Rust from the tank, has come thru the filter, have had the tank out ,( a pig to put back in!!) there was one only rusty spot, directly under the pick up pipe, the accelerator pump diaphragm on the side of the carb split as well. Its  had 3 new  fuel filters, a new fuel pump and  new fuel hose. Its being put back together today (fingers crossed)

This is just a quick update while I have an opportunity to get on line and post a few pics.

So far 17 (that number again) Fiats have attended including 11 Fiat 131s. Three new 131s to the group and welcome to Fintan, Pat and Dai (with his mate Moc). We are expecting a few more attendees tonight and are aiming for the magic 20 cars.

Irish Vintage Scene magazine attended in the morning so look out for a feature soon. Here is a pic of the group before setting off and some from our first stop at Inch beach.

Some Youtube footage from the beach...!

A great weekend, and fast becoming a fixture on the Irish Fiat calender it seems.
Thank you for organising this Kevin Doyle.

Even driving into the car park of the Hotel saturday morning, I was saluted hello from 100 yards away !
There was a few photos by the Irish Vintage Scene staff photographer of the group and the cars parked up static and, as they pulled away for the Dingle run.

First stop at Inch Strand, and it was mooted to all to park on the beach for a photoshoot !!!???!!!
The almost universal first reaction to that idea was, that salt, sand, and Fiats don't mix, but after a few brave souls went down to check their differentials function by drawing massive rings on the sand,
all bar one vehicle eventually caputilated and went down for that very picturesque shot that Kevin posted.

We went for food in the Stonehouse restaurant beyond Dingle and Ventry out towards Slea head, and had great food, after begging the waiter about 6 times to take our order.
I got served with two meals such was the chaos, but had only ordered one, and only paid for one too !!

We "did" the Slea head drive and Seamus Mannix was trying to inform us about the significance of the vistas we were enjoying,  but all the drivers only wanted more road, and ignored poor Seamus until he got the hint !

On back thru' Dingle, where the thirsty made a beeline for the Hotel in Killarney and the drivers climbed Conor Pass, then back into Tralee at speed. We will make no mention of the poisionous petrol fumes I was breathing due to a porus 131 petrol tank sharing it's contents with the pax cabin of the 131 that I was passengering in, but suffice to say I ended up a high as a worker in a Tippex Factory.

Upon hitting Tralee, Seamus guided us onto the old Killarney road. We snuck over the Dingle mountains and cut out miles of road to get back into Killarney in record time.

That night we were treated to a presentation by Kerry Vintage Society who awarded spot prizes for
1. Youngest Newcomer, which went to Bob in his immaculate and unmolested 127.
2. Spirit of the Event, awarded to Lazarus who promtly gave 3 speeches in a row, and finally to
3. Hardest Luck, which went to the Conway man from Tralee, who broke down in Farranfore en-route to thedinner with a failed fuel pump, and a special thanks to Dave Nolan the Red X19 for attending this breakdown, even if he did drive an Alfa Romeo 166 to the event (traitor).

I wish there could have been a prize for everyone.

Sunday we eventually got going and I was employed as camera car to try to get a nice bit of footage.
but a culmination of many road factors and one 131 loosing power up the Healy pass ment that for this year at least, the legendary sight of four 131 Sports tearing up at full bore to the summit of Healy Pass was not to be...
Lets hope Kevins editing shows a better view than the one I saw out the back window,

On the summit of the pass instructions were passed to close the road at the other side of the pass, and 3 km of beautiful twisting tarmac was reserved exclusivly for the use of the Fiat men to create a bit of chase footage of them going full throttle up the other side of the pass. Again events transpried to scuttle that attempt when a car left the road on a hairpin.
We went down to push out the car and saw there was nearly zero damage to the vehicle.

All in all, a dramatic weekend of speed and mayhem.
Car of the Event for me was Anthony O'Hallorans 128-3P,
but many cars came close
I can't wait until next year.

Thank you for all warmth, the hospitality and chat lads and ladies.
It's a pity Gerry Kennedy was not here as would have loved every second of it.
It was heart warming to see his photo in Brendan O'Beirnes fab 13,1 a real nice and thoughtful touch.

Best regards, Graham.
