Title: 3ma13 in Miesbach, Bavaria - Wednesday 8th to Saturday 11th May 2013
Post by: Thotos on September 12, 2012, 01:29:01 PM
Details of 3ma13 have now been added to the website. Please have a look at the News (http://www.131mirafiori.com/news19.htm) section for details of 3ma13 and look at the Travel and Accommodation (http://www.131mirafiori.com/travelacc2013.htm) section for the special all inclusive hotel deal.

We must thank Robert and Ingrid for rising to the challenge and taking on the organisation of 3ma13 and for so quickly organising all the details of what promises to be another great 3ma. Robert and Ingrid have already planned all 4 days of 3ma13 and of course negotiated a very special hotel deal for us. I'll let our organisers give you more details.

Thank you very much Robert and Ingrid, I'm very much looking forward to 3ma13 and already started planning the 1200Km drive to Miesbach. I'll probably have an overnight stay somewhere in Northern Germany for the drive there but I need to be back in the UK for the 13th of May so it'll probably mean a very long non-stop drive back on Sunday the 12th  :-\  Still, there's plenty of time to plan all that.....

Thanks Theo for the introduction and your kind words! We are very happy to make 3MA2013 happen close to (and one half day in) my hometown. There's something for everyone I suppose; at this very moment I cannot reveal everything we are planning, but among other events there will be a visit to the BMW works in Munich, scenic drives around the lakes south of Munich, moderate alpine driving, visiting one of King Ludwig's world famous castles and some other interesting sites, visits to famous beer brewing monasteries and a surprise fun event  ;)

This weekend we finalized the hotel deal (details in the Travel and Accommodation section) and did some reconnaissance driving, finishing two of the four planned trips. Here are some appetizers:

Driving south on the Autobahn (yes, in September the weather is perfect):

Linderhof Castle, one of the Castles King Ludwig II had built (and the one we are planning to visit):

Driving into Austria:

Neuschwanstein Castle, the most famous one, currently undergoing restauration and thus looking like a piece of art by Christo (works to be finished by the end of 2012):

The "Wieskirche", a country church looking insignificant on the outside and mindblowing on the inside (at least if you are not more into modern Bauhaus architecture like me):

The "Museum of Art" (Buchheim Museum) on the Starnberger See, housing a marvelous expressionist art collection:

The best thing to do with a BMW  ;D:

Cattle going home in the afternoon:

Presumably one of the lunch stops:

A private toll road near the Sylvenstein Lake:

Wooden bridge on the toll road:

Lake Walchensee:

The Walchensee  Power Plant, a hydroelectric power plant we are planning to visit:

More pictures to follow in the next weeks.

Another interesting aspect (although I hope we will not need it): just a few hundred meters from the chosen hotel, a friend runs a garage, so technical assistance will be provided if needed.

We are very much looking forward to welcome you in my home country!

Appetite has been duly whetted Robert.

Count us in.

And congratulations on being the quickest to organise a 3MA!! Looks like it is almost all done 8 months in advance of the event!!!  ;D

Nice pictures. I noticed the Mercedes star managed to make it onto the site in a few places :)

I love the area and have been many times before on summer holidays.

Unfortunately it looks like I won't be able to make it as my new job suffers from the same problem as my old job, no holidays other than in school holidays >:(

Did a reconnaissance trip today for the Mountain Day. As luck would have it, it was the worst day of the week, raining cats and dogs all day long (like it can happen in May sometimes  ;D), but in my opinion a drive that's worth it. Although the car was not best suited for the steep upgrades to be mastered, the Swedish freighter "VascoExpress" performed flawlessly - remember, it has done 260,000 miles up to now  :o. Here's the mediocre selection of pictures from a rainy, foggy day in the Alps - in sunshine (or without rain or fog) it's mindblowing! I enjoyed the journey nevertheless, hope all 3MA2013 attendees will do likewise  :)

This nice road (Germany's highest) goes up to 1560 m (1700 yd.). If I remember correctly the highest mountain in the UK is 1500 yd. and cannot be conquered behind the wheel of a car  ;)

The view on a clear day would be this:

So planning for 3 of the 4 days is already in the final stage. Hope to supply some better pictures next time  :(

If the weather is fine looks like a must do event!  ;)

Have you given any thoughts to an alternative in case we are unlucky with the weather Robert? Would we really face into such a challenge if there was nothing to see?

That's a state of the art route book Robert.  :o

The pictures will help immensely and should assist when navigators lose their place on the "standard" route books. I can't imagine how much time & effort is being put into this by you though - Thanks on my behalf!  :)

That certainly is an excellent road book. Nobody will have a good excuse if they get lost  ;D ;D

I'm sure everyone who will attend will thank Robert for this, not just Kevin  ;D You certainly have my thanks as well  ;)

Don't worry about the slow take-up Robert. It's like that every year. It's like English buses, nothing for ages and then they all come at once  ;D Most people leave it to the last minute to book. I'm also guilty of this  :-\ I haven't booked yet but barring natural disasters I'll certainly be there  :D

Not sure I'll have a 131, and Mrs Rob 131 will probably want to join in  :o :o

Also, if there is no place to park trucks transport vehicles?  ;D

3MA2013 will not include any high speed contests or similar trials. German law is very strict about that. There will be some amount of "spirited driving", for sure, and we do plan a little fun event; but this will not be on closed roads, and the rules of the road have to be strictly observed. There is no race track in Bavaria  - and Bavaria is no race track!

To make a clear statement, I had this translated into Italian (by google, looks not that bad:)

Thank you for writing in Italian, but consider that in 20 years of driving (DE) I never got a ticket and when I do the "crazy" I only do it in suitable places.
It's OK, I'll have to settle the road, which is quieter ;D

I think "doing a crazy" might become the 3MA13 catch phrase.  ;D

I think most attendees understand that all need to respect the rules of the road but I think as organiser Robert you are correct to make your point clearly as you have.

Roll on May.... :)

Robert you can be sure  ::)

we will drive like the street legality  :-X

but if we found a closed place (private property) and the owner say OK,  we rock the street.  ;D

Some update on the booking situation.

At this very moment we do have 10 (ten) confirmations for 3MA2013. We had blocked 15 rooms with an option to block some more, but this has to happen before April 1.

The lucky 10 are:
- Theo
- Simon
- Kevin&Jacqui
- Phil&Tansy
- Jason
- Heini
- Norbert
- Enzo
- Werner&Gisela
- Robert&Ingrid

So, up to now only 4 ladies  :o - 3MA is becoming a boy group thing  :(

If you are booking your room, please ensure to quote "3MA2013" to get the negotiated arrangement. I hear some confirmations sent out did (for whatever reason) not include the dinner arrangement; however, I talked about this today to the hotel manager and he assured me that everyone on the 3MA2013 ticket will get the full arrangement. If you encounter problems, please do not hesitate to contact me; either via PM or via email (robert.bardorf@gmx.de).

Looking forward to seeing the hotel parking full of 131s,
Robert

Before booking and give certainty to participate, wonder what it cost to enroll in the meeting and what it costs the hotel to sleep in a double room.
As regards meals, if they are included in the hotel or if they are carried out in the company in other places.
Also how many kilometers are planned for the revolution (rpm) in the days of the event, to calculate the costs of fuel. ::)

There is also opportunity to get close to the park and car carrier (truck and trailer) for the day of the event?
So I value the company of other friends with the 131S ;D

Hi Valentino

Have a look at this page and see if it answers your questions.... :)

http://www.131mirafiori.com/travelacc2013.htm

The problem is that the page does not allow me to copy and paste and then translate it into Italian. :'(
I also thank Robert for additional information, so if I understood it, the inscription is included in the cost of the hotel, it would be 60euro per person per day (x5 = 300euro) in a double room with breakfast and dinner in the evening, including secure parking and internet access (if single room, 85euro per day).
The lunches at noon are all part and are carried around during the event, calculating an average of 200km per day, we must calculate about 3/4 of fuel (30-35 liters), so I ask if there is gasoline with a high number octane, its cost in that area and the ability to fill the late evening.
Thank you. :D

That looks about right Valentino although I had not realised that lunch was included.

Cost is obviously important but I think it's impossible to put a value on these events. They are always lots and lots of fun and it's only a matter of time before Angela Merkel dreams up a way of taxing them!  :)

If you come do you think you might have any 131 company from Italy?  :)

Before informing other friends with their 131, I have to understand what it costs the event in general, partly because I then explain to the parties concerned and make them understand that it is a week, then off work. :'(
In addition to these costs, we must consider the possible cost of auto transporter, because if they all come with Abarth Rally, not all aprezzano the highway, so you have to be careful not to exceed the cost too much and the "consumption" of the 131R. :-[
Moral costs hovering around the 1.500euro to crew for me is not a big deal, but for others it can be friends. :-X

Boys,

don't get this wrong - LUNCH IS NOT INCLUDED!!! It never was and it never will! I stated this also clearly in a PM to Valentino:

Quote
Il pranzo non ? incluso.

Don't know how he got that wrong.

Quote
so I ask if there is gasoline with a high number octane, its cost in that area and the ability to fill the late evening.

There is a SHELL station offering "V-Power" near the hotel (1 km), they are open until 10 p.m. as far as I know - will check this ASAP. There is also an ARAL station offering "Ultimate" 7 km away. Fuel costs I do not know what it will be in May; at the moment, stations in Miesbach charge 98 octane petrol at 1.63?, V-Power at 1.74? per liter.

The website has a built-in translate function (powered by SLA (http://translate.googleusercontent.com/translate_c?depth=1&hl=en&ie=UTF8&rurl=translate.google.com&sl=en&tl=it&u=http://www.alsintl.com/&usg=ALkJrhgXCrV_JOW46EdbuIvMyah3mgd_Ew) and Google (http://translate.googleusercontent.com/translate_c?depth=1&hl=en&ie=UTF8&rurl=translate.google.com&sl=en&tl=it&u=http://www.google.co.uk/&usg=ALkJrhinh_NSS9OOc1AS9P9lCOI8q0UMbQ)). There's a panel on the homepage with a drop-down menu that allows you to select the language you want. Looks like this

or in Italian

Here's a link to the website translated in Italian http://translate.google.com/translate?u=http://www.131mirafiori.com/&sl=en&tl=it&hl=en&ie=UTF-8 (http://translate.google.com/translate?u=http://www.131mirafiori.com/&sl=en&tl=it&hl=en&ie=UTF-8)

and here's a link to the page Kevin sent you

When you use the built-in translation function for the website, the forum postings will also be translated (here's the forum in Italian http://translate.google.com/translate?hl=en&sl=en&tl=it&u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.131mirafiori.com%2Fsmf%2Findex.php%3FPHPSESSID%3Dj9d94n62v3m34t5ie8o54kvfb7%26 (http://translate.google.com/translate?hl=en&sl=en&tl=it&u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.131mirafiori.com%2Fsmf%2Findex.php%3FPHPSESSID%3Dj9d94n62v3m34t5ie8o54kvfb7%26)) but the login will not work  :-[ I'm still working on getting that to work...  :(

Of course a much easier way for you is to use Google Chrome browser for the Internet and that will translate everything for you automatically. If you haven't tried it yet get Google Chrome at https://www.google.com/intl/it/chrome/browser/?hl=it&brand=CHNG&utm_source=it-hpp&utm_medium=hpp&utm_campaign=it (https://www.google.com/intl/it/chrome/browser/?hl=it&brand=CHNG&utm_source=it-hpp&utm_medium=hpp&utm_campaign=it).

Just a suggestion T....

Unless I've missed it on the forum page, would it be possible to have the translation option on the actual forum page itself...which is the page most regular visitors go directly to I suspect.

This is the way it works for Michele's site (EFFE131) in Italy... :)

It's possible but not as simple or as useful as you might expect. As I mentioned, the login (or even registration) does not work when in translated mode as the database engine gets translated input or no input at all. Plus not everything is displayed properly while in translation mode so things such as CAPTCHA panels during registration do not display at all. On top of which Google Chrome already translates everything on the Internet so there's not much point in trying to outdo Google!  ;D Many have tried and failed!!!!  :-\ ;D ;D ;D

Hello and welcome lorf!

Well, if YOU come we're for sure one more ;)

Seriously: we counted between 10 and 20 131s on the past events and a variable number of "guest cars". That's a lower number of cars than you can expect from a A112-world-meeting with up to 50 cars, but I doubt those have more fun us ;D
However 3ma's are the biggest gatherings of 131s during the last decade I know of and I don't want to miss any of them, regardless how many cars there had been.

If this doesn't convice you, you might have a look for a cheap flight,  enjoy 3ma13 as a passenger / co-driver and bring your car in 2014...

Regards,
Ren

At the risk of repeating what's already been said above, a number of people travel long distances to attend the meetings and they have done so for a number of times. So while 1800Kms is a great distance it's not going to be a record for a 3ma attendance  ;D. Ren?'s cool chart above shows our record for car attendance (Fiat 131s that is as we've had people attend in other cars) is 20 cars in Germany in 2010 (but Ren? owned 5 of them I think  ;D ;D). People numbers are between 25 and 40-ish. You probably won't be surprised to know that the 3 of us who have answered you so far are from a group of just 4 people who have so far attended all six 3ma meetings and I certainly won't miss any future ones if I can help it.

Lorf, 3MA is a must for all 131 enthusiasts.  8) When will you ever be able to see so many of our favourite cars driving along together or filling a car park or "taking over" a small village  ;D

Whilst we have plans for a couple more yet there is nothing certain about anything and we have no idea how long this will all last (hopefully a long time but we really can't tell) so I'd say get along as soon as you can.  ;D I'm sure you'll make some new life long friends - I know I have. 8)

I've always questioned  :-\  whilst admiring and having respect for those undertaking the distances covered in 3MA's. However, i'm not convinced I would want to be travelling those distances in a 131.

We (the family) are looking to go to the Cote D'Azur this year by car. The wife isn't too keen on 1,600km (each way) in the Alfa  ;D ;D

Maybe I should suggest a 131 :o :o

Driving last year to Germany/Holland was the best experience ever. I would definitely do it again and in any 131. Our return trip covered about 700 miles in a 2 litre twin carb'd motor pulling at 4500/5000 rpm constant in 5th....2 litres are great high speed long distance cruisers. The only problem is the wallet gets very light quickly! ;D ;D

That is going some. :o :o :o

It's not really (says he who only has to do 800 miles one way) because 700 miles were done in a day while the 1200 miles will be done over 3 days I believe.  As to the ear drum beating, I'm sure it wasn't as bad as in my car because Bobby wasn't playing the Eurovision Song Contest songs  ;D ;D

I remember in 1991 travelling down south in my Sport (about 220 miles each way) and wishing I had my previous Cavalier Mk2 GLS.

However, back then my Sport was my only car. Any 131 purchase now would be for different reasons and I am sure noise and refinement (or the lack of it) would not concern me. It is not what 131 Sports are about.

Rob,

I'm sure you are a very nice chap - so please excuse me for being frank. Reading your posts I would strongly recommend you keep fond memories of having once owned a 131 and stick to a) owning modern cars and/or b) getting yourself a 1:18 scale model of a 131 Sport - this will not make any noise, ist not uncomfortable, and you can carry it around in your up-to-date car (I even wonder if the 159 is the right car for you if you cannot make a 1600 km trip without complaints) to destinations not close to home.

You are very much welcome at 3MA2013, in your Alfa (it might not be the only Alfa, since my 1974 GTV might also be in the game, piloted by one of my closest friends), or if you prefer effortless travel: there's a quite prominent airport close to Munich which is connected to England as well, so you could fly in, pick up a comfortable rental car (definitely much more comfortable than the Cavalier you were so fond of 22 years ago) and cover the remaining 60 miles to Miesbach without any hassle.

Already back in 91 you preferred a Cavalier to a Sport for short distances - so what now, 22 years later? A Sport will not make you happy. Face it - it's fond memories, it's not the future. Come to Miesbach, indulge in seeing/hearing/feeling the 131 spirit, take a ride in various models - you are certainly welcome as a passenger in my car - but don't try to buy a 131 anymore. It won't make you happy - and even less your family.

Rob, no offence meant - English is not my native tongue, so this might sound harsher than it is intended.

Just to add my two-pence worth here too if I may.. :)

Not only am I planning to drive to 3MA13 in my Abarth in May but I'm also now planning to take it on my family holiday (that means with wife and both daughters) to Sorrento, southern Italy in late July  :o

(I couldn't go to Italy and leave it behind) 8)

Yes noise and refinement are likely to be an issue, but as you say Rob, that is not the point of owning a 131. Trans-continental journeys in a 37 year old car are not everyone's cup of tea, but there is simply nothing like driving your favourite machine through the mountains and along by the lakes and sea on a hot sunny day. It's what they're for! ;D ;D

Robert

No offence taken. Like I have said in previous posts I?ve always admired and respected those of you undertaking thousands of km distances in your 131?s. Not quite in the way I admire Motorcycle Racers (especially those on the Isle of Man TT), but respect all the same.

It is just at this point in my life with a ?youngish? family and having just returned to the UK after 4 years abroad, I don?t have the time or inclination to cross continents by 131. I?m sure in years to come when I have less demands on my time, I would love to drive 131?s over such distances. I may come to 3MA this year and it would be flying to the nearest airport and hooking up with you all.

I may not be as enthusiastic or committed as some on this site as regards 131?s. If I was then I?d make a compromise somewhere in my life and immediately purchase a 131 and be travelling in it this May to Germany. However, I have been very enthusiastic about 131?s since I was a toddler (I?ve recently turned 40) and would like to think I am fairly knowledgeable on the subject having demonstrated this through contributions on this site for approaching 3 years. Moreover having met Simon, I am sure he can endorse my 131 enthusiast credentials.

Simon

As I have said in my previous post, I am a 131 enthusiast but nothing like you.

Sorrento in July with the family in a 131. This shows serious 131 commitment that I would suggest has not been bettered by any other 131 enthusiast on this site. Especially considering how hot it is down there. We flew into Rome last year and hired a Fiat Bravo and stayed for 2 weeks near Florence. I found this hot and after a few years in the Middle East would be more accustomed to such temperatures.

Moreover, with such a trip planned in the 131, you have bypassed your Two 6 Cylinder 5 Series, that would be perfect for such a trip.

As much as I like my Alfa and in the context of what I paid for it with the miles that I am currently doing (another 435 mile drive after work this coming Thursday night) I have been spotted on the BMW Used Car Website looking at year old 520D?s. Note the sensible (maybe even boring to some) 4 cylinder models.

If I was going for a 6 cylinder, I would have to abandon BMW and go for one of the big Cats (the mighty British XF), with either the 240BHP or 275BHP Diesel Engine.

Rob,

I am happy to endorse your 131 credentials Sir! There is absolutely no doubt you are a 131 fan! 8)

Your 6 cylinder big cats wouldn't stand a chance matey. ;) My 6 cylinder diesel BMW has 286bhp ;) 8) ;D and that's just one of the reasons why I love it so much.

I hear what you say about the heat in Sorrento - Kev131 said the same - oh, but I want my 131 Abarth when I'm in Italy, but with all the comforts of my 535d M Sport! 8) ;D ;D ;D ;D

3rd ERT, done today, see some impressions from "Lake Day" which will be the first day of 3MA2013, intended as a "warming up" event  ;) the itinerary will be: Lake Starnberg, with a coffee break at one of my all-time favorite spots on the lake; climbing up the Hoher Peissenberg that features (on a clear day) a marvelous panorama of the Alps; a visit to Andechs Abbey on the "holy mountain" above Lake Ammersee  where the monks have been brewing well renowned (and strong!) beer for more than 900 years - we will have a late lunch there (we Bavarians call this a "brotzeit"); and back to Miesbach (240 km round trip). Here's some pics taken on a cold, windy April day:

FRT (Final Reconnaissance Trip) finished today, and behold! finally the sun came out (although only at an altitude of 1400 meters) - see how awe-inspiring the Alps can be! This tour takes us up to an elevation of 1570 meters; round trip from Miesbach is 290 km, but with an Autobahn interlude of 80 km at the end of the trip  ;).

All 3MA2013 participants may want to check the brakes of their cars, since there are some steep and long descents - even the Mercedes, with 4 disc brakes, showed brake fading down the Ro?feld  8) - also it might be a good idea to bring some spare brake pads?

Since a few days we made the final decision we don't attend 3MA13. I couldn't leave home earlier as wednesday and need to go home on saturday. That leaves me 2 days of attending and driving a hell of a lot. Beside that I have to leave Ela for 4 nights and with our little babygirl still asking minimal twice every night that's simply too much. Believe me it was a difficult decision, the car is fully ready as was my mum,(she really likes the driving events), but I think it is good this way. Of course I wanna wish you all a very pleasant stay and hope to see loads of pictures and nice stories.
