Title: Fiat 131 Abarth - Built for the Agnelli family
Post by: kev131 on November 12, 2009, 09:55:58 PM
We have posted about this car before when it came up for sale - Price at the time was ?45k and it didn't stick around long - Apparently 11000 kms from new. There are some obvious changes from standard which probably would not be to everyone's taste but what is extraordinary is the condition it's in - Look how clean it is. Most of the pictures were taken by a friend of Zsolt (Moha on this forum).

MOST INTERESTING !!!

The rear suspension details ( like axis diameter) look different that I have seen on both strada and corsa ...

That's like a new car  :o And I like ALL the changes. I think I'll play the lottery this weekend as I'd very much like to have it  ;D But what is of most interest to me is that while the rear hubs have large hub-centric spacers on them the front hubs have spacers wide enough to cover the central ring and there's no hub-ring protruding to locate the wheel. If it's good enough for Abarth it'll be good enough for me so where did I put those Cromadoras for my Sport....  ;)

sorry but who are the agnelli family?

You are obviously spending too much time with Toyotas!  :o  ::)  ;D

The Agnelli family are the founders and owners of Fiat. On July 1, 1899, Giovanni Agnelli  created the Fabbrica Italiana di Automobili Torino, which became Fiat. And the rest, as they say, is history! Have a look at http://www.answers.com/Agnelli?gwp=11&ver=2.4.0.651&method=3 (http://www.answers.com/Agnelli?gwp=11&ver=2.4.0.651&method=3)

Kiichiro Toyoda founded Toyota.  ;D (note the spelling difference in the name of the man and the company).

Nice....very nice......even if it is blue ;) :D ;D

I don't think it's been used a great deal though. :D These cars need to be used not left in the garage ::) OK, so mine is 'very' used, but that's what they were built for. Never been out in the rain has it - a bit too clean for my taste, but lovely nonetheless. ;D

Miro,

Just to reiterate whats been said above, the underside of the car in this article is the same as mine. All the suspension parts are the same size and in the same location on this blue car and my red Stradale, the only difference being that I don't have brass fittings - and there's a bit more road dirty on mine! :D ;)

Also looks like my car has a dented sump too :o cos mines not as perfect as that pictured. ;D

I love to see it in this condition ;) Great car, fab condition, even when it was pink it should be great as pictured here.
Yes Enzo, Racing grilles should be mounted exclusively on Racings or eventually Volumetrico's ;D

Simon,

You are right ,

Just looked at the pictures I have. You are absolutely right.  I was mislead because the cars I photographed were quite dirty , and it lookes different.

Miro

PS: As you know I am rebuilding original stradale suspension, Couls you help?

It should have been blasted up a forrest track well before now  ;) the seats and door panels look  very a smart  upgrade ,, but blue pedel rubbers and knob surround  :P  too clean to be used again will be put in a glass case  :(

Missed out on Euro millions, perhaps National lottery tonight!

What a machine, stunning!

Not fond of the blue interior tho, prefer the original with the stripe going through the seats.

Love 131's......best cars in the world!  :)

Nice 131... but looks built to show , more than Go...  And Simon they're Anodised fittings , not brass .

Not so sure about the Rally grille on a road car... would look awesome on a full on Rally car..

And whats the story with the Halfrauds style door cards and back box?

Fair enough I'm biased... but I prefer any of these... More original , and they all get driven hard

They look the part Tristan all 3 are very clean looking cars but I cant beleive your father competes in the rally one... but you are right they are not brass but anodised nuts and bolts so they should never rust but I bought an Alfa with one of those back boxes on it and beleive me it was the first thing to be done to that car was putting an original exhaust on....

well i must say even though my favourite is the sport/racing this car was very very nice looked like new in fact &  i didnt know much then about what it really was.

Title: Re: Fiat 131 Abarth - Built for the Agnelli family
Post by: mirafioriman on November 14, 2009, 08:49:18 PM
I would class this as an 'original' car because that is what it is the way it was built. It was just built differently for a particular purpose. A bit like Albert's Volumetrico a one off. I wouldn't expect everyone to like the differences from standard but I'm sure the original owners did.

I would say there are very few manufacturers that still supply parts for a car that they stopped producing about 25 years ago it is not just Fiat that this applies to. It is one of the facts of life for classic car owners. If parts were still available for everything many more old cars would survive and would be in better condition. Classics would then just be run of the mill cars and no longer something different.

Tristan, the Rally grille on a road car is actually a Racing/Sport grille on a Stradale ;D ;D ;D I think we are even. ;) :D

I didn't think my Stradale (a road car with a Rally grille incidentally :-\) looked that bad, but if you can source me a genuine Stradale grille for reasonable money rather than a modified 131 Special one, I'd be very interested ;)

On the subject of sourcing things - I don't suppose Tristan you've had to find a source for the road springs of any of the cars in your photo have you? I'm in need of a full set for my car as they have 'sagged' over the last few years and the usual people have drawn a blank. Any ideas? I could get them made but I don't have the original specs - do you?

I am biased and I quite like the red car below over most others ;) Perhaps not the 'most original' but a fully serviceable 'real' Fiat Abarth 131 Rally Stradale nonetheless and I love it :D ;)

Simon can you not get the springs made if you get all of the specs lenght and weights etc... but if you need to know how an original Stradale should look and drive I think a holiday near Pat is called for as I dont think anyone on this planet can find fault with his baby  :o :o

Title: Re: Fiat 131 Abarth - Built for the Agnelli family
Post by: simon131 on November 14, 2009, 10:25:33 PM
Yes, if I get the weights and lengths I can get them made - but I don't have them, hence my request to Tristan. :)

I don't need to spend time near Pat thanks, I've seen his car in the metal before. ;)

I know how an original Stradale should look, I have one - all I need is new springs ;)

Now Simon when I say the car is original it is a bench mark for others as Pats car I feel is better and more original then the one in this thread, it has an original unwelded body, original oil tight engine and all the interior is time warped original Abarth which this blue one doesnt have so on that basis I beleive it is one of the very best in the world.....

Hi Simon , please don't think I was running down your car , I love all Abarths , from Autobianchis ot 131s , including yours .
Andy got his suspension refurbed , I think by Mr Mourenhout..  ::)  , other than that it's not so easy to get Abarth type coils "off the shelf" as they are the smaller diameter style as is common now . There's a company called Faulkner in the UK , as seen in Demon Tweaks catalogue , they might be worth a shout?

Thanks for your reply Tristan 8). I'll do a search on Faulkner and see what happens. Must admit to being a bit reluctant to use GMR as he is usually rather expensive :o

Cheers, Simon.

TBH I wouldn't be as worried about the expense as his somewhat lackadaisical service! I'll have Andy's car here for chassis tuning soon , and can do some measuring for you . In about 2 weeks .

Simon,

Check with these guys.

http://montehospital.com/pdf_files/suspension_and_steering.pdf

Although this technically is for Lancia Monte Carlo, but a lot of fiat/lancia  parts are interchangeable and this guy who runs it also know a lot about 131 an 124.

Let me know of the result , if you do

Rear dampers for the Monte appear rather expensive tho - they want ?195.00 each :o
