any particular reason why intake manifolds are made of aluminium?

it's quite easy for me to fabricate custom steel intake manifolds and not so with alu manifolds.

weight, conductivity, easier/cheaper to cast aluminium for mass production.

You can fabricate your own manifold from steel and it will be fine, it might just weigh a wee bit more and not be quite as "flash" as a fabricated aluminium one.
