Title: RHD vs LHD
Post by: eugene on January 20, 2010, 11:41:06 PM
A topic was started on the Lada site two nights ago about the production of right hand drive cars and such a small market that is out there for them.A map of the world was shown between RHD vrs LHD,however after seeing so few countries being RHD,i said to myself, does it even pay car companies to produce RHD cars  ::).Also are RHD cars more expensive compared to LHD cars on the world market ::).Would like to hear peoples views on this one.Eugene

Well Lancia stopped making them for a start >:(

I can imagine it would be one major job to turn our RHD counties into LHD ones and an expensive one ::)

I know there are more countries that use lhd but there are a fair few that are rhd, ie  uk, ireland, australia, new zealand, south africa, india, well all the old british empire and common wealth countries and japan so they are probably worth making if they export to those areas

I dont have to worry about the insurance as my policy covers all EU registered cars even if they are not in their original country but I heard about the issues with the insurance as I heard the 1st of July is the date  :o :o

correct Dave july this year is when the major changes happen with the insurance, even if you have an existing policy covering you at the moment it WILL not be renewed, about time too as far as i am concerned, getting rid of bad rubbish & all that!!

Not allowing LHD cars to be insured is stupid in my opinion. What happens when people in a RHD car want to tour Europe or when people from Europe with LHD cars want to visit Ireland? Although personally I find it easier to drive a RHD car on the left of the road I don't think it should not be allowed to have a LHD one.

Well maybe you wont be able to leave your island then or invest in proper insurance as at the moment you would have to upgrade your insurance in continental countries to meet local laws but I have this covered in my policy including local bail bonds for Spain but maybe english insurance would cover you in Australia. But this regulation is part of a european directive to help in the block exemption of the motor trade but I beleive it will be phased in in 2 years time that RHD cars will not be allowed in the main land of Europe as they will be able to be insured there and as such the owner would be open to fines and or prosecution as I got this info from the EU parliment site
