Title: AYV 871 T - Where is it now...?
Post by: James on August 15, 2008, 08:35:34 AM
This Sport might be known to the forum as the picture was taken at the entrance to Snetterton Race Circuit around 1990/91.An italian marques event was staged and it looks like a convoy of Fiats had made the trip - i remember the Sport and 130 tc flooring it straight after i had taken the photo !!

Here's a the reply i got when emailing Mark::::::::
Hey!!! What a great pic..!
Yes , that's me in the Sport and my good buddy in his 130.
We went to watch the Italian Intermarque at Snetterton.......boy, those were the days...
I`ve still got his car, albeit in total pieces, ready for a re-shell as it was written off(banana-ned)..
Still hanker after the `old sport` though... Great car.
Mark

I must have given you that photo Jason? I took the photo on Saturday, 27 July 2002, 5:27:26 pm when I went and saw the car with the possibility of buying it. I didn't buy it and bought the Sport I have now a few months later.

Don't want to say too much as I might offend someone but the car wasn't for me. It needed a lot of work both bodily and mechanically. Most panels started to bubble, brakes didn't work, suspension (chopped?) was bouncing all over the place, too much of the hard to find trim was missing and it had the wrong interior. Even so, as I had all the missing trim and interior from my silver sport and I knew everything else could be sorted I did make an offer on the car but seller and buyer were too far apart on price to agree.

After restoring several Fiats I don't believe there is such a thing as surface rust ::)

Every time I find some corrosion and attempt to clean it off a hole appears ;)

I agree. These cars (and in fact most older Italian cars) rust from the inside out. By the time you can see the rust on the outside surface you can be sure that it goes all the way to the other side.

Theo.
When you want to own a 131 and not dream about one for the rest of your life, sometimes if you are not in luck to find or afford a mint one you have to make a compramise and find one that need's some work.
Within reason that is.
If we all bought mint 131's the 1/2 bad one's would end up in the skip.
Do you not agree ?

At the end of the day it all comes down to the price you can afford and believe the car is worth. A restoration can cost a lot of money if you do it yourself and a massive amount if you pay others to do the work. As I have found with many of the cars I have restored or worked on the problems often go much much deeper than you first think ::)

Yes I agree. In fact as I said further up this thread, I made an offer for that car but seller and buyer were too far apart on price to agree (I think that's the same expression I used last time). The car needed work but nothing that wasn't repairable. It needed some TLC and some money and while I was willing to give lots of TLC we couldn't agree on the amount of money I should be spending. The car that I eventually bought instead of the one above (my current 131 Sport) also needed some work and still does.

I agree with the two of you there is a fine line between the money you spend on a mint 131 and the build cost of getting a 1/2 decent 131 that needs either a full strip down or part rebuild.
I think the question is
Do you want to buy a 131 that you can be involved in its rebuild and enjoy working on it.?
Do you want to buy a 131 that someone else has done all the work on  and have nothing to do.?
