Post by: rosi on September 20, 2015, 08:18:31 PM
I need your help. My 131 make a loud noise at the rear of the car.
My fitter has revised the complettly rear axle with the cardan shaft an the
Cardan joint. The flexible disk are removed with a new.

After this works the noise are the same as before..  Im frustrated...

The fitter means now the gearbox is the problem?!?

What do you mean? Please help me.. Thx

I will upload a mpg video if it is possible... The noise is hearable...

Rear wheel bearing maybe?  I've had them fail before, the noise would be different on a left or right hand corner in the road.

Differential or propeller shaft bearing noise won't change when you turn a corner.

I'm on my 7th 131 and I haven't had gearbox problems so far, that doesn't mean it impossible unfortunately  :(

How about putting car on a ramp, and using a long thin screwdriver as a stethoscope have a listen around.

Is there any vibration at speed? Source of noise may be the bearing 15 and (or) 17.
Anyway, look at this http://automotiverepairguides.blogspot.com/2013/07/fiat-131-1975-77-drive-axles-repair.html (http://automotiverepairguides.blogspot.com/2013/07/fiat-131-1975-77-drive-axles-repair.html)

But if you do as I suggested, you can run the car up and listen on each component to find the bit thats making the noise.

Why Do any thing else.

maybe the crown and pinion are breaking down.

Run the car up with the wheels raised,

And put the screwdriver to your eye, and the pointy end on the diff casing around the bearings.

 ;D

I put the car up with the wheels raised and the engine is running.

With the screwdiver we listen the noise nearly the diff.

Again... The diff is completly revised.

When the car is running without shift --> no noise
Only with craft up second until fith shift is hereable..

Do same test on propshaft center bearing,  if noise is less it has to be in the axle.

Drive shaft bearing.
Diff bearing.
Gear mesh wrong.
Gear teeth worn.

If it was the gearbox you would hear with the test.

Propshaft noise will lessen as you test the diff and box.
