I am retired, enoying the classic car Fraternity

« on: September 13, 2012, 11:36:48 AM »

I recently began to "recover" a " X1/9 " after it was stored for sixteen years and the carb was causing irratic running of the engine, so I asked a friend who served his apprentaceship in the trade with the fiat distributors of Ireland in the 1970's to take a look at it for me and he told me to
clean the filter in fuel pump also to dismantle the carb, remove the float and boil  it (THE CARB) In water for a few hours  with dishwasher non foaming detergent. This was very succesful and the car is now running really smooth.
I just thought I should share this with you in case it may help someone.  Joe

I'd keep a close eye on the carb while doing this, (with eye protection). Dishwasher detergent is very caustic, I've had a few knives where the handles have fallen off because the aluminium rivets had been eaten away, admittedly this was after many cycles through the dishwasher.
