Title: EUL 523V Head investigation
Post by: Sev131 on April 15, 2010, 09:52:21 PM
Removed the cylinder head today as no 4 cylinder has a problem. Suspected a valve problem. Was never really happy with the head as it was very tappety. Checked tappets prior to removal- all near enough spec. Did all the usual comp test etc.

On removal, discovered that it has 84.6 pistons fitted.

Going to use a spare head which has had all new gaskets, new stem seals, seats re-cut/valve lap and the tappets set today.

Looking after little lad tommorow, so work commences overweekend.

My No:4 seems to making funny intake noises on part throttle.
I also carried out compresion tests
No: 1  =160 psi
No: 2  =160 psi
No: 3 = 155 psi
No: 4 = 155 psi
So i believe on a hot engine that these figures are OK.
I did swap the heads a few years ago, im wondering if ive put a head with known problems back on, im trying all sorts to rectify the problem before i resort to pulling the head off ;D
I have the old head but it has the smaller valves.

Steve,  Just a shot in the dark but years ago had an odd noise from a beta 2000 and checked everything and it turned out to be wear inbetween cambox and valve bucket but this car was very high mileage

My car started making strange intake noises too   :-[  Sounds a bit like Tweety bird has been sucked into the engine  :-\  Can't find my compression tester and cant find the time to check anything either but I think (and hope) it's just a gasket problem....

Ive never had a sweet running engine in my 131,
Theo, hearing your engine last year made my mind up to try and do something about mine, hence the ECU/EFI, surely it will have to run better with those modifications!
To date, my engine sounds just the same as it always has and still drops to 3.5 cylinders on tickover! i must admit i still have to do some basic adjustments to the ECU/EFI mapping and i still have some shimming of the valve's to do but if i have no joy it will be 'Off with the head' ::)
Im also hoping to fit another manifold that will give me a shorter Injector to Valve distance. Im no expert but im led to believe that the shorter the distance from the injector to the valve the better. Im also going to angle the Throttle bodies at 22.5 degrees! because ive also been told that it is the optimum angle for TB's, although i cant find any reference to the 22.5 degrees anywhere on the www. im trying it anyway.
David: thanks ill check cam box and valve buckets when im next at home, probably when i take the head off ::)
