OK, I think I've found the answer to my question:

The Abarth Coupe, a genuine sports car will now bring sense back. From the tuning arm of Fiat, utilizing the platform of the Fiat 500, they've created a low stance, lightweight, go-kart handling sportscar with a small revvy engine.

Interesting article here http://www.wheels-weekly.com/2008/07/abarth-will-be-developing-its-own.html

not sure thats right about being based on the 500 platform as there were rumours about something using the lotus elise chassis - and that does look like something that could be based on the elise rather than the 500.

Here's the 'Elise' car.

The white car is different and apparently based on the 500.

Is it Based on the  500. Have to admit it looks good in the white and red. A slight hint of the smart car but with balls......
