About 1/2 an hour after the 131 Racing's photo shoot it cut out and I had to wait a while until it would start again  Sad.  Beside the road I changed the petrol filter between the carb and the petrol pump (I cary a spare  Smiley) but the one I took off wasn't blocked to be honest....

Another three "stops" later and I had limped the Racing home.  I had the carb off and changed all the gaskets and had a good "tidy up" while I was there.

The next time I took the Racing out I only got a mile from my house before it stopped again.  It re started after a while and then stopped half a mile later - a really good time to have the top of the carb off to look at the float chamber but it stopped on a blind bend half way up a hill...... Sad

I live at the top of a hill which isn't good if you have Fuel / Ignition Load problems.....

I ran the Racing on the drive and after 30 mins it cut out, coil was really hot but still had a spark at the plugs, carb float chamber was almost dry.....two different problems  Huh

Fitted another (any) coil but that got hot too.  Had the (Bosch) control box to bits but no obvious dry joints etc...This coil is on it's way I hope...

Still thinking about the float chamber being nearly dry I had the fuel pump to bits but all looked OK...

The connection to the distributer is almost worn out but that's for another day...

The pump was "pushing" at about 4 psi and "pulling" at 0.4 bar (measured at the tank)

So the pump is pulling Ok and the vacumn held so no leaks....there's just 6" of pipe in the tank left  - what could go wrong?

Didn't see that coming  Wink

The brass gauze filter had come off and the pick up pipe was completely blocked  Sad

Cleaned up the whole assembly and fitted a filter after the tank just so I could take the Racing out.

Limped it home an hour later removing the filter in the boot beside the road (it was completely blocked)......

Anyone know the Italian for "I would like to buy a new tank and pick up please"  Grin

Hi Steve,

I had the same problems with my Kadett C Coupe years ago. I removed the tank and counted 150 screws and putted them into the tank. Than I closed all wholes and fixed it to a concrete mixer they use on building lot  Cool

After 2 hours of turning I cleaned the tank and took all 150 screws (thats why I counted them before) out of it with all the dirt and rust  Grin

Than I gave the clean inner side a new sealing with this stuff:

Problem solved  Wink

In case your still at it hers some more

That coil, is it meant to be used with the electronic ignition system, there different  (Hot coil)

Cut out, does your rotor arm have a resister in to, this brakes down and the car does what your is and gets worse.

Get rid of the original Manuel pump and fit a little square Facet type about ?35 works well, tells you just before you run out of fuel as well.  Will work on a modified engine up to a point as well.

Hi Heini - nice one - I like it, can I borrow your mixer please  Cheesy

Hi Roger, thanks for the tips - much appreciated Smiley

The coil should be for electronic ignition but it's not branded very well so it could be anything.......Waiting for an NOS Bosch from Ebay so the (now) coil will come off again.

I wondered if the coil is failing or is something killing it....even had the NGK Iridium IX Spark Plugs out and put some old used BP6RES back in that have been in my tool box for about 20 years just to be sure.....

Rotor arm and cap are new but that doesn't mean they are OK as we know.....I've got a "known good" Magnetti Marelli ignition system (thanks Brendan) but I'd rather get the Bosch system working than mod the wiring to fit the MM system.  No problem if I have to but nice to keep it original  Wink

This is on it's way from Italy so that's one box ticked.......... Grin

The coils have a different resistance to them and that would be why the over heat if it's a wrong fit

i fitted one of those little facet pumps to one of the stradas, lasted 6 years, less than 10000 miles, i complained to the supplier who said "that was about right"
i wont be buying another, ive since converted back to a mannual lift pump that ive never had problems with on any of my fiats since i started driving them in 1989.

On a standard engine I think the standard mechanical lift pump is fine. After all it's what the car's designers fitted to all the cars and they made a few Wink

Changing the tank on the 131 Racing.  Managed to find a FIAT new old stock tank in Italy for a reasonable price ? it was the shipping that broke me  Smiley

Don?t worry, I know it goes in the boot, the bonnet is open to disconnect the battery ? only seemed right with all that petrol being tipped about?

Changed the sender / pick up unit while I was there, the filter gauze was missing off mine and I remember the fuel gauge senders failing back in the day anyway

Filtered the muck out of the old petrol with half a coke bottle stuffed with a bit of an old cotton T shirt?..Petrol?s not cheap you know  Sad

Went out for a drive afterwards, I?m not going to speak too soon but I could be nearer getting the Racing ?shaken down?  Wink

Going to fix the wires from the Bosch ignition unit to the distributor next ? only a few strands left before it fails?.
