Post by: tex on January 18, 2009, 08:58:18 AM
What is the best way to archieve say a 25mm lower than standard 131R. What type make/model spring is best? What shock make /model is best without spending heaps of $$$?

Course not , just cut a couple of rings off the coils . only if your going serious circuit racing you need to get them speciely made up springs but monroe and koni ,spax did the shocks but that was years ago you could get them rebuilt if you can't find old stock somewhere

why bother post to get an answer like that? looking for proper info ! you cant go cutting springs & expect the car to perform & yes if you car is lowered you do need an adjustable panhard rod & some rollcenter adjusters at the front.

You cant just go cutting springs! This has been discussed many times here and on other forums (if someone can find the link would they post it please) the reasons are many and ill leave it to someone else to explain why, but basically spring rates will change and the spring will not sit correctly on its base this can ccause the spring to dislodge itself during driving.
I achieved a 25-30mm lower stance by buying some lower stiffer springs when they became available (advertised here on this forum a while ago), the seller might be able to help you with the make and supplier if he reads this thread. I had to wait a long time for them to come along, you may have to wait awhile yourself.
Regards
Steve

The shocks on ebay are just standard patern  not uprated ....cutting springs was all we had in the ole days
and every body and his cat did it  and cutting off the top bit on variable rate spring stiffens it alot , and yes you can heat (not too much to alter the temper of the steel ) the last 3/4 up to make a new seat.

Try The Mancunion Spring Company (should be on the web) I think they will manufacture springs to your design and spec.

Hi why no go to a company like FAULKNER SPRINGS and have a set made up in the poundage you need. They told me they can even do anti roll bars too.

Re locate the track control arm on the cross member by redrilling the holes  further up to reduce camber change on dive and roll.

Stiffen the rear end to stop roll which will reduce that roll over steer on corner entry.

Some of the damper companies will build you some adjustable dampers if you send them the old ones as a patern.

Dont lower the rear further than the front as it will wash out the cars turn in.

Hi all don?t know if this helps at all but me and a friend totally overhauled Front and Rear Suspension on EVW15T back in 1998.

We replaced both front and rear dampers with a company called Leda Suspension Ltd, This company specialist Suspension. And was a manufacturers & suppliers of there own Suspension

Front Struts

On the front struts / damper.? I gave this company my old legs which they used? only my brackets and made me new front struts to match my old ones. which were up rated by about 25% approx, they also shorten the damper to match? the ride height. Which aloud for the shorter springs I bought when lowering EVW. In 98. I believe it may have been 30mm.

Rear Suspension

On the rear suspension? I all gave this company my old dampers, they? replaced? with their own dampers they made with standard fitting, these were all so adjustable to make the rear suspension much harder and firmer, the rear dampers were also made shorter to allow for EVW being lowered.

This company also adjusted? camber / tracking on EVW after it had all been fitted.

I all so needed to supply springs for this company before they were able to make front and rear damper to allow for the modifications, for up rated springs and the lower ride height.

Spring

The spring were bought from a company called ProSport in Melton Mowbray, in Leicestershire. I found this company while looking through some performance magazines which listed springs? for a Fiat 131
Theses were lowered 25mm 30mm and up rated springs, I am going to have try look through some old magazines to confirm this or maybe try contact the company if they still exist ??? or someone else might want to try and track this company down, but these were bought in 1998

I have copies of invoices for all of these company?s in my history. It lists all the part numbers when I purchased these back in 1998. If these invoices will help I will add them for any reference for someone? trying to hunt some down ??.Good Luck

The overhaul improved the steering and handling 100% which gave me a lot firmer and hard drive and also made steering feel much lighter on the front end which? felt the difference when hitting the Rat Runs !!

If any one wants me to add invoice for springs,? will scan a copy and add for reference if it helps.

Good luck in hunting for them ??? but I am sure any suspension company will make these for you. If you make inquires
