Title: 131 Insurance
Post by: eugene on August 30, 2009, 10:15:07 AM
When i bought my 131 and when i went to insure it,i was told by a few people to go to Hibernian(Gangsters).I had garage insurance in my own name for 5years.The scumbags refused to insure it,because i didn't have a car policy in my own name and yet i could drive any vehicle that my driving licence covered. My reply to them was,why should i take out another seperate policy, when the policy that i have covers any vehicle that i chose to drive. The answer i got was, those are the rules.
Anyway,i went to AXA insurance. Not a problem here and a excellent price, but they were very particular that i prove to them that it wasn't a replica. So i took a photo of the car and that sorted that.
So my question is,can a Abarth Replica or any Replica car be insured in Eire.I don't know what the insuranceCompanies in other countries allow, but i think in Eire one could have huge problems in trying to obtain insurance on a Replica  car.Would love to hear what other people know about this.Eugene

If you have a garage policy assuming you specified for social and domestic aswell on it how come this wont cover the 131 as I have the same policy but have to get a seperate policy for my tractor because I didnt go with the machinery clause. All classic policies in Ireland require an every day car to be insured seperate as classic policies generally will not cover you driving to work as this is not in the spirit of the policy as it is only for pleasure use but try AXA....

The garage policy covers me for social and domestic porposes, but i think Hibernian were hoping that i
would take out a seperate policy on my car and then insure the 131 in a seperate classic policy(Thives).
My garage policy covers me to drive the 131 in Eire, but i had to take out a seperate classic policy on the 131 when i was driving back from UK and when i was driving through France and Italy. The classic policy also covers me for breakdown in any European Country within the EU,but the garage insurance doesn't cover breakdown. So thats why i took out the classic policy with AXA(excellent company for classic car insurance)..Eugene

Move your trade policy as mine covers foreign registered cars and all of europe and this includes bringing cars back and the AA do a very good european recovery package and very reasonable but agreed valuations will save you alot of hassle with this recovery insurance as read the full policy as there are alot of get out clauses on them. But never found Hi b trade policy competitive for me but I need modified and supercar cover as you never know what does be down in my house from Ladas to Maseratis....

Whew... I'm glad we don't have all that craziness here in the states.  Since my car is still a junker and not restored insurance is only $21 a month.  Once she is restored and beautiful I will have to pay $70-$80 per month.  It's pretty straight forward here.  If I were to take out a classic policy on her it would cost about $20 a month regardless but I couldn't put more than 2500 miles on her per year.  I'll be going with full coverage at $70 a month.  Seems pretty fair for excellent coverage.

Sean it is not that bad here really as the policy Eugene is talking about is a special policy for anyone involved in the motor trade wether it is for the repairs or sales of cars but it is only around $1500 a year which covers all of your cars and recovery trucks etc....

What is this problem with insuring a replica.... but 278 is not bad but sure it is expensive if the car is already covered on another policy but my trade policy covers replica and modifications without any issues sure they dont even ask what type power they are....

Why i am asking this question about the Replica is,when i was insuing my 131 with Axa,they asked my 2 times is the car a Replica ???,so i took a photo of the car for them.I asked was there some problem with Replica cars, and the reply i got was that,we don't insure Replica cars.So is it difficult to obtain insurance on a Replica car in Eire without being taken to the cleaners :-\ ::).Eugene

I cant understand why people have problems with insurance as my last private car policy was on the Thema and that was declared as an LS turbo face lift which is group 20 in the UK and was the same to insure as a 911 and at 26 it cost me a 1000 euro fully comp and that even covered the sunroof glass as that costs over a 1000 euro  :o :o :o
