the car is a Fiat in all but name, built in Spain under license, change the badge and i would challenge anyone to tell the difference.
Bottom line is that this car is a bargain at that price.
As its been living in Spain you can bet the A/C is still in good working order as well.
Car is in Northern Spain, not far from Santander (ferry service to the south of England)?

Steve.Take Lada and Fiat especially the old Lada's and old Fiats.The 124 is the same as the 2101 Lada and yet the Fiat is pricelss and the Lada is worthless yet there the same car.So the same is with Seat and Fiat.This is just my opinion and i also respect your opinion.Eugene

I do think the country of manufacture has a large part to play as local materials were used, panels pressed using localy sourced steel etc.

And lets face it the 131 continues on in Turkey.

But i also hear what you are saying about originality, a FIAT can only ever come from Italy.

I do not agree about "Russian = worthless". It is an obvious over simplification to put it gently. The engineering was absolutely excellent ! Sometimes the materials were poor as the good one went for spacecraft and arms. But the 124 Ladas were able to drive for decades on  poor Russian roads and off road and at - 40 degrees Celcius - conditions in which both Seat and Fiat equivalents just stopped dead in the middle of the road.  Sure they rusted , and sure things broke off , etc., but the car kept going no matter what. Lada was made for the Russians driving in Russia and not Brits driving in Essex. They certainly did the job very well and neither Fiat nor Seat under such condition (including lack of service , poor fuel, poor oil,. etc , etc.) would not last more than a season.

You guys need to visit Russia n one of these days - you would be surprised ...

PS: If I were to drive 124 daily  I would rather drive a Russian Lada version than Seat or even Fiat. .              

I thought Ladas looked like Fiat 124s but mechanically were quite different.  Didn't they have a Lampredi designed engine specifically for the Russian cars? And I thought the suspension was quite different to cope with the Russian countryside.

This actually may have been the case , though I would rather think they used an engine they already had deigned and built with some bearing / ancillaries modification.

It would be interesting to explore ...

I am fairly sure that I read somewhere that not only Fiat sold the complete assembly plant to the Russians but also got Lampredi to design an engine for them that would be suitable for Russia i.e. simple, easy to manufacture, low maintenance and able to run on varying quality of fuel.

Thotos,  I was also told this too that they sold the whole 124 factory and shipped it to Russia and that they got part payment in steel that the Russians had recycled but this steel was from ships that had been at the bottom of the sea for 30 years which explains a lot about Fiat metal at the time, Alfa used it too apparently which explains suds etc.

Nice story but this bottom of the sea Russian steel as reason for rusty fiats makes a nice tale but not true...

Sory to interupt but I think that GROUPO FIAT  took steel from a ship scrap yard in Livorno Italy... This is why older FIAT's Alfa's etc are in this condition...

I think they were just thin and badly protected........

about lada2101 VS fiat124

engine is italian design on russian specs (demand). unlike 124's pushrod engine, lad has OHC.

suspension is the same except they used a bit longer and harder springs. rear suspension on all ladas (sedan and station wagon) is from 124 familiare. i guess in order to simplify production.

fiat 124 was made from 0.7mm steel, while lada was made from 0.9mm. therefore, it was heavyer by about 100kg and quite a bit stronger when it came to collisions. rustproofing was equally bad as on fiat.

whole plant was shipped from italy in 1966 and production was started in april 1970. italian engeneers worked along russians untill end of 1972.
