Title: Postal Charges on Ebay!
Post by: mirafioriman on March 30, 2010, 09:16:10 PM
Been trying to buy a 131 part from Italy.

There was no postage price so I emailed the seller and they replied they could send it for 30 euros. I thought this was a bit much for the part in question but I decided to go ahead.

Ebay would not let me as the item required immediate payment and the seller had not entered the international postage amount. Si I emailed the seller again.

Today I tried to buy the item again and the restriction has been lifted but now the postage price is 45 euros! This is nearly twice the price of the item!

This is the second time I have had problems with Italian ebay sellers and postage cost. The first one was a seller who quoted a postage price to the UK in his listing and then when I bought the item doubled it!

I had similar problems trying to get an exhaust part for the Trevi from Italy. The postage costs were very high and kept changing. In the end I bought the part from Germany which even though more expensive, the postage costs were reasonable and remained constant.

Some Italian ebay sellers have been good but not all! German ebay sellers I have always found to be very fair.

I would not be so categorical in classifying people by nationalities.

I actually do not believe nationality has anything do do with integrity.

It is not nationality but individual character.

My experiences are actually just as good/bad with both Germans and Italians as well as the French . Belgians,Serbs, Russians, Poles, Jews , Christians, Muslims, Hindu and everybody else.

In defence of the Italians,
I have also puchased items from Italian e-bay, and had no problems.
I suggest that buyers make sure  before you send any payment the postage is as agreed, if not simply dont send the money's e-bay will understand.
The seller then has to relist and has lost a sale.

In deference to any of our members or visitors who might be offended by the original subject title it's been edited slightly - Hopefully the message has not been lost.  :)

Isn't the answer to that question obvious from the old subject title Nick...? :)

If you are suggesting that it is "silly" to try to avoid offending people then ....well..... let's just say that we have different outlooks...

On your other proposal, go ahead with any new thread you think will be of interest to others.. but I'm sure that most of us want to maintain an easy going and friendly atmosphere in this international community and we can make our points well without being offensive or by using derogatory generalisations.  :)

Now now boys, cool heads and all that ;D
Im sure we have all been stung now and then by postal charges on e bay wherever we buy from in this world so i do think as moderator Kev is right to change the thread title, and as Kev says the rest of the story is their any way.
Some sellers ask extortionate postal charges, a habit i have now of checking postal costs, some sellers see it as an obvious way of gaining more for their item.
I bought something that didnt exist, got my moneys back, but that wasent the point, if advertised it should have been available, a certain e bay seller advertises an item (normally something rare for a classic car) and says he has 10 units available! when in fact he has only one, it tricks you into a feeling of security! thinking that the seller must have large stocks of items, so you think you are buying with confidence only to find out that the item has sold and he has none left, this despite the e bay listing now showing 9 units remaining if you also look carefully for thse of you who know the seller im going on about you will also notice he uses item photographs and descriptions down loaded from the www.
Then when you complain to e bay the seller then hits you with a 'did not pay for item' charge against you, ebay knows no difference and makes a case which you have to defend then the seller request the transaction to be cancelled after which you cannot give negative feed back,
Enough said!
Steve

When I saw it I thought it was a good price. If you try to calculate the shiping costs though ... For Athens Greece is 208.01 USD...

Slightly off topic! I don't know what freight to greece would be, but these are only about 10 pound each.

You'd need an SR and an SL.

Well I have never had a problem with any Italian I have dealt with but I have noticed there is a problem with other nations dealing with Italians. But then most of the Italian community in Ireland know me and often offer to bring stuff home and even check cars out for me without charge so to me they are a sound bunch....
