Title: Noisy clutch/gearbox when idling
Post by: paulcas on May 03, 2010, 03:23:00 PM
Help/advice please  :)

When the car is idling the clutch/gearbox is very noisy, almost a rattling sound. When I depress the clutch pedal the noise either goes or is less noticeable.

Please advise on probable cause and how best to remedy - thanks

possibly the clutch release bearing.

Thanks   :). Does it need the bearing replaced or is it a sign of maybe the clutch needing replacement ( no slipping at present) ?

unfortunately, noisy idling is usually a sign of failed main front gearbox bearing, not a clutch release bearing (druklager). if it was clutch release bearing it would be quiet when clutch is released and noisy when pedal is pressed.

Thanks  :). Do you mean the bearing as shown as (2) Primary shaft bearing in the photo?

that one.
it's often the cause of noise on idle and whining noises later, when, due to long term improper position of the primary shaft, gears get damaged. when you remove the gearbox, just check for radial movement in the gearbox imput shaft. if there's any, replace the bearing. oil seal ring will need replacement too.
i have 5 or 6 131/132 gearboxes currently and all of them have the same problem

Thanks  :). Do you know if the primary shaft bearing and oil seal are easily available to buy?

pretty much. i've alvays been able to find them with not too much trouble. never by parts number though, but by dimensions.
