Title: Re: retro ford 5th lakes tour 2010 Post by: jasonh131 on June 18, 2010, 10:24:24 PM In the 80.s t we always had a rivalry with the common agar-den ford boys with their little cast iron engines and heads , we the fiat boys where much more classy, blew them out the water ,,,you was either a ford man or not , just like being a united fan or city and never twain shall meet and i can say never had a ford then and not now ;D ;D and the rivalry has stayed with me all these years just like the 124 spider clan against the MGB s (convertible austin A60 ) :D :D :D :D
Title: Re: retro ford 5th lakes tour 2010 Post by: brensport on June 18, 2010, 10:47:49 PM Took up the chalange J many moons ago at the rally of the lakes in kilarney a convoy of rs 2000 and mk1 golfs and capri ,s out classed them and embarassed them in every way 8) 8) no brag just fact ;D
Title: Re: retro ford 5th lakes tour 2010 Post by: david on June 19, 2010, 05:40:31 AM I never liked fords as always gave you minimum on the spec front ie they had three speed gearboxes when everybody else had four and when every other manufacturer had five speed gearboxes they lagged behind for years with four and the engines were cheap and antiquated also suspensions were basic usually leaf springs when most other companies had moved on years before. So I think fords view was whats the least the public will accept and we can get away with. I mean who bought a mk5 cortina when you could have bought a twin cam 131 for about the same money or cheaper ! Theres an old saying " The British public will buy anything as long as its got easy spark plug access and cheap exhaust replacement" which explains why ford sold so many cars.
Title: Re: retro ford 5th lakes tour 2010 Post by: sid131 on June 19, 2010, 09:43:54 AM David the British public bought Fords because they were British cars i reckon like the loyal followers that bought Austin princesses in the north cos they were British, Fiats were assembled in Ireland in the late 70s early 80s & had a guaranteed Irish sticker but that didnt stop them literally falling apart with rust! my god you should have seen my dads 128 what a heap of rotten shit! then they released the ritmo & that spelt the end of Fiats rep here that car did untold damage, a lot of the 70s & 80s cars did the same but when Toyota cars & possibly others came back for repair they replaced the door & wing but Fiat just filled & painted the rust end of, Toyota recalled all the late square headlight Irish starlets because of a axle mount problem & crushed them, what did Fiat do with the made of cardboard chassis ritmo? nothing!
Title: Re: retro ford 5th lakes tour 2010 Post by: david on June 19, 2010, 10:37:32 AM Nick, I agree with you about the british public buying british or thinking they were as this is really an american company and this their british division, I remember mk3 cortinas with I think made in belgium on a plate under the bonnet and most if not all the the fiestas were manufactured in spain as I recall. There is no arguement with the poor metal quality of the Fiats at the time as we all know how bad that is from personnel experience. But surely you have to agree on the technical front their products were poor to say the least with the possible exception of the lotus cortinas etc but they were in such few numbers and really a lotus product. Please dont take this as a personal dig because you are interested in fords this is just my own opinion.
Title: Re: retro ford 5th lakes tour 2010 Post by: sid131 on June 19, 2010, 12:45:00 PM Hi David no way not personal i love the banter about car marquees, i am restoring a 1972 Granada past month or so & believe me it was well rotten but i have turned it around cut out all the rust & welded in new steel & new panels etc & will be a very good shell, there is the ford & the fiat in the workshop & same amount of rust is swept up after working on either car lol! but winning the battle with both shells.
