Title: Road trip USA
Post by: kev131 on September 21, 2010, 09:28:53 PM
I'm just back from a two week holiday that was very much car based. It involved 12 days of driving mostly in California, 2000 miles and much sight seeing. It has the most tenuous link with Fiat (having seen 4 124 Spiders and no 131s) but it was an awesome touring experience in the second most powerful car I've ever driven - A 3.7 litre 305 hp...? If people are interested in a non 131 but car based account of a road trip, I'll post up the pics and details.  :)

Life must be good Kev :)

Mirafiori spotting in the Canaries in June followed by a 2,000 mile trip around America. Your not related to Judith Chalmers by any chance! ;D

Gee... I wish Si - You couldn't be further from the truth - You should see the sacrifices I have to make just to have a little holiday...! :)

Rob no I wasn't in the Canaries this year - Back in 2007, I was - Are you confused with that maybe..? :)

Kev

I was probably looking at an old article on the website after a long day at work and not observing the date thought it was current. ::) Probably the first sign that I am losing my marbles, or time for a less stressful job ;D.

Well seeing as you asked so nicely...but bearing in mind that it is not a subject that is exciting too much interest.... can any movie car chase fans guess why this car prompted me to take a few pics as it was parked on a steep hill in San Francisco...?  :)

If you've guessed the movie Graham ..wasn't it a certain black car that kept losing its hub caps..?  :)

Or are you refering to a white Beetle with 53 on the side?

Herbie...?...No - Gee I didn't think this would be that difficult - Here's another clue - The red one was our hire car by the way - Best Ford I ever had!!  :)

Oh yes you're right, ok it was the green Beetle that spawned over and over again in the downhill scenes  :)

I think I can hear Lalo Schifrin's 'shifting gears' playing in the background  ;D

Well here's the answer for anyone still reading this thread..one of my favourite movies, actors and car chases...

The green VW was a famous continuity blunder as it appeared at least 4 times in the chase sequence. The two modern cars are re-makes of two classic cars that featured in the chase scene. Fantastic modern interpretations of muscle car styling.

We met a German couple with this car in Yosemite - "We only have ze small engine" - Only 3.5...! ;) The Challengers were like gold dust compared with Mustangs..which were everywhere.

Don't know what you mean about the Ford Si ... :)...Sure, you rarely knew what the front wheels were doing, the ergonomics were a mess, the roof was a pain to raise and lower, we got 22mpg (but petrol was 52c a litre), the gearbox didn't respond well to small throtle inputs, I could go on and on.....but I forgave it everything when some souped up Jap coupe thing challenged us away from the traffic lights one day and the Mustang lit up its tyres and crushed its opposition - Like the Americans say - You can't beat cubic inches! ;) ;D
