For sale on ebay a 1978 orange fiat 131 sport with Tax and Mot.

Looks good in the pics but at ?4,500.00 for the starting bid I doubt he'll get many rushing to put cash in his pocket.

Interesting that it has a "Racing" badge even though it's a RHD UK car and a fairly early one as well (very late UK cars had "Racing" badges).

Don't think much of the side-skirts though and I hope they are not hiding something they shouldn't!

I think the Buy It Now price then was ?7k - No takers on that occasion and I have my doubts this time around...although from the reg no I think this was a Fiat press car. Not sure whether that would add some value or not - Certainly not enough to compensate for the drop in value initiated by the mods!? ::)

If someone came up with the ?4,500 he'd sell it now as there is no reserve, but that money is extremely high for such a car. I can bear those spot lights, which aren't wired in incidentally! Also, I think they would not get through any MoT as they obscure the front number plate and headlights! ::) I also wonder what has been drilled through to get the corect fixing for such heavy lights! :o

The skirts are terrible, as are the ripped seats which have been badly repaired according to the advert. I would also very much doubt the mieage as being a genuine 78,000. My old black Sport (JPD 969V) have over 120k miles when I eventually parted with it and the seats were not in any way worn or split at the seams.

The rear spoiler and wheels look alright though!! ;D

Yes Kev, DLO was the reg of an early orange 'Press car', but the numbers on this car don't ring any bells.

I don't know why you think the last 131 Sports were badged as Racing, Thotos. In my experience all UK Sports (even the late ones) were badged as 'mirafiori Sport', unless some muppet fitted a Racing badge to try to make the car look 'special'. ::)

I know for sure some late Sports sold in the UK were badged as Racing. My suspicion is that all cars came into the UK with "Racing" or no badges on them and the "Sport" badges were fitted in the UK. Maybe they run out  ??? or just couldn't be bothered in the end.....  :-\

OK lets take all the negativity away, lets say that the mileage is genuine and the car is solid, forget the extra lights and the side skirts and try to look at the car as a good solid Sport requiring only the TLC, how much would it then be worth?
By the way im not the seller im just trying to find out what you guys think a good looking sport is really worth.

That's a question asked by many people, many times and very often but I've yet to hear a convincing answer!

The problem is that the market is so limited that if you are trying to buy one you can't find it and if you are selling one you can't find the buyers. There are a few true fans of these cars that will pay well over 'book price' to get the right car for them.

Classic car magazine price guides in the UK give a top value for a 131 Sport of under ?2,000!  :-\ Please find me all the mint condition Sports for under ?2000 and I'll buy them all!!  ;) I've tried on several occasions to convince several Classic Car magazines that their guides are inaccurate but even though they usually say "we obviously need to amend that" none of them have.

I know of good condition 131 Sports selling for well over ?2000, you only need to keep an eye on eBay to see that. I know of an excellent condition original 131 Sport that sold for ?4000 over a year ago.  So I'd say that ?4000 is about the right price for a good 131 Sport. A truly excellent original condition  car with low mileage will probably sell for a lot more than that to the right buyer.

I wouldn't sell my car if you gave me twice that amount but it doesn't mean my car is worth that, it only means I am crazy (about my 131 at least.....)   ;D

Yes, i've seen that the classic car magazines don't seem to put a high enough value on the 131 sport - they even have it below the strada 130TC. And its price isn't even close to what they value a MK2 escort - yet its twice car (in my opinion).

In terms of valuation -  there aren't many sports left, and any that are left are either:
1. fully restored and owned by an enthuasist
2. sitting in a yard somewhere rotten

So for valuation i don't think your going to get a good one anymore for ?2000, I think its going to be either an excellent condition car at ?4000+ or a car that needs a full restoration at ?500 - ?1000.

There was a guy in scotland last summer that sold a 131 sport rolling sheel and transit van full of spares for ?2000, and around the same a gun metal grey 131 sport sold on ebay for ?1380 - car was totally rotten with good engine, gearbox and interior, that's it!

Me too, only my bad one isn't actually that bad - is definately repairable. A good project for an enthuasist!

Steve, the subject of 131 Sport values, and any other 131 come to that, has been a point of great excited debate for ages ::) IMHO the value of all 131s has increased quite markedly over the last few years, as demand outstrips supply, but price is very much dependant upon condition and originality.

131 Sports have always been the most desirable model, followed closely by other twins cam variants. People of my age (almost 40 ::)) now have some spare cash (unless you restored an Abarth last Winter! :o ;D ::)) and fondly remember cars that either their Dad had, or they had as teenagers/twenty-somethings before they had 'responsibilities'! ;)

Genuine Abarth Stradales will always attract good money and I've seen the value of these rise about 10 - 15% in the last three years or so, to about ?17,500 Sterling for a good, useable example.

Sports in 'good original' or 'good restored' condition, with all of the correct, standard spec trim and upholstery and in a factory colour will make anything from ?3,000 to ?4,500, perhaps even more in the right circumstances. For some reason the orange cars seem to fetch a higher value than others.

Good examples of Supermirafioris (if you can find them!), both series 2 and 3 cars, are now beginning to get good money - probably because people looking for cheap Sports can no longer find them! ;D But don't expect even the best one to fetch more than ?2,000.

Other models and engine types may fetch less, but be prepared to be surprised. CL's probably won't go for much more than ?800 - ?1,000, even if mint, but Panoramas, which are now becoming extremely rare will make double that money for the right car!

Prices are subjective, but basically condition and originality are more important than mileage.

Personally im pleased, if people want to pay silly money for a 131 good, makes mine worth hanging onto, better than going down in value.

Obviously the seller is a man with a HUGE chip on his shoulder!
But I must say, I too am pleased that the car was sold and I hope it's gone to a good home. After all, I am the guy who bought an overpriced Lancia Gamma because I didn't like the owner! The car was begging me to save it and 11 years later I am still looking after it as best as I can!
