Title: Price gearbox Racing/Sport
Post by: mirafiori76 on March 10, 2011, 04:57:00 PM
Does anybody know what a fair price is for a Racing/Sport gearbox? I have 1 for spares but can sell it. I might have a buyer. But only for a fair price. Not cheap, not expensive.

Is there any significant difference between Sport and Supermirafiori TC gearboxes ?  There are various ratios listed in Haynes, but not for Sport, though. Anyway, I'm not interested, but I think used TC gearboxes in general go for 50-80 GBP in Poland.

in my corner of europe 131/132/argenta gearboxes usually go for around 30e

Usual price for a good working 131 Racing gearbox is about ?70 - ?100.
They are on ebay all the time.
Supermirafiori 5 speed without Abarth quick shift usually ?40 - ?80

Hi Mike,

i think 30 , 80 , Euro or 50-80 GBP are not the basic price! here examples around the world.

http://www.subito.it/accessori-auto/cambio-fiat-131-abarth-e-racing-piacenza-21717642.htm
300.-

http://www.subito.it/accessori-auto/cambio-fiat-131-racing-e-abarth-ravenna-19488746.htm
800.-

http://www.subito.it/accessori-auto/cambio-abarth-131-palermo-15481001.htm
1000.-

i have two for spare, and one with new (bearing's they cost alone 150,00) and complete set of gaskets!

I think 500.- are a fair price!

that's just whishfull thinking. do you actually know anyone who has paid that kind of money for 131 gearbox?
when someone advertises it as "abarth" gearbox hey expect to get wast sums. that damn "abarth" shifter is exactly the same as in any argenta and there's plenty of those out there just without abarth in the casting. also, those gearboxes aren't rebuilt, just some of them have been washed.
yes bearings are a bit expensive but 150e is the price if you buy them from same guys that sell gearbox for 1.000e. i have rebuilt several of those gearboxes and new bearings were
45e - main front
32e - main rear
12e - gaskets set

i'm disgusted with people constantly trying to push up the prices of fiat parts. yes, that would make me a bit richer because i have about a dozen of these gearboxes but it also makes maintaining our cars and restoring them expensive. this should be about hobby, not making money. or is it?

Pedja,

Just sold it for 300. The buyer wants to install it in a 124 Spider because it's stronger then the 124 box. He had also contacted a parts dealer here in Holland. That guy asked 400. So i think it's a fair deal.
I agree 800 or even 1000 is way too much.
Thanks  ;) :) :)

I can only go by experience, i have bought two spare gearboxs from ebay uk.
Both gearboxs are with the Abarth shifter both came as not reconditioned, so one was straight out of the car and the other was dry stored.
One of them had reverse gear jammed so that cost me ?60 + shipping
The second box works fine and was dry stored ?88 + shipping
I guess i would pay ?200 for a good re-conditioned box.
Enzo _ Subitio prices are always extremely overpriced and give no guide to anyone, most sellers on Subitio are selling at rip off prices
ebay.it is the same half the Racing and Abarth stuff on there is a rip off too.

I think you guys are so used to buying expensive genuine Abarth stuff for your cars you now expect all other Fiat stuff to be in similar price brackets.

http://www.mirafiori.com/faq/content/131transswap/131transswap.htm

and Pedja all bearings not only main front and main rear!

@ Enzo
missunderstood you. you were talking about whole set of bearings.
i was just giving you examples of prices. after all in 90% of cases only front one is croaked.

there's some stuff inside those gearboxes that's next to impossible to find new and i had to resort to dismantling several gearboxes to scavange undamaged parts to assemble one that's perfect.

@ Mike
if you can find more customers at those prices i'd be happy to supply as many gearboxes as you want at half that price. i can rebuild them or i can send gearboxes in good working order, straight from the car, test driven to check for problems.

For me it is not important that the shifter carries the name Abarth. I just could sell it an needed a fair price because i had no idea what to ask for it. The buyer is very confident with the price since this gearbox is becoming scarse her in Holland. It was either 300 or 400, so he chose mine.
I can sure use the money but i am not for the lotery price. I think i made a good deal. And that's that ;)

you did and this story is no longer about your (ex) gearbox.

i guess it depends a lot on prices in general. in my neck of the woods, where average pay is 330e even 30e is too much. in your country, where average pay is at least 5 times higher, it's ok to cost 300.

Pedja,

You seem a bit upset. Why? But i guess you're right. It depends on the country you live in. For you this may be a high price, for Dutch standards it's cheap. Even when parts for 131's, or any old Fiat in that manner, are becoming scarse here.  :)

not about you. you're realistic guy and frankly not a good trader, you'll never get rich that way   ;)
i like dealing with guys that consider this to be a hobby, not a way to make living.

i'm annoyed by guys asking 1000e for 131 gearbox. they intentionally push up the prices. then ordinary people look at these ads and price their parts accordingly and in the end you can't buy bloody gearbox for under 1000e. thats why lately people consider a price of 150e for grille for 131 racing to be a fair price. it's not. realistically, it shouldn't be over 50.
last year i bought NOS grille for 132 for 15e. ok, it was a bargain. realistic price is 30e. and i see those advertised for 300e. NUTS.
i sold couple sets of NOS 131/132 pistons lately for 200e per set of 4 with pins and piston rings. one set went to UK to a forum member here. how much did i pay for them? hard to say. i bought a full trailer of fiat parts for 1k euro couple years ago. how did i come up with 200e price? i went to my local fiat parts shop and asked for these pistons. they didn't have them but nearest match were fiat croma pistons. price? 360e for a set of 4. should i have priced my pistons accordingly? yes. but the point was to sell them, not to have them gaathering dust for years. should i have priced them higher because they're not produced anymore? again not, for the same reason.

i guess that if you live in a world of people who pay 150k for abarths than it's ok for a gearbox to cost 1k.
recently i encountered that problem trying to get new or good used taillights for my 124BC. i found out that 200e each is considered a bargain. why? because damn lamborghini uraco used same taillights. suddenly i was in a world of 100k euro cars.

I understand your frustration. And your right. i will never get rich. And not just because i sell parts to cheap  ;) Better, i bought a lot of parts through the years and ind the end i threw it all away because there was no market. About 20 years ago i formed a club here in Holland to bring enthousiasts together. Started with about 50 members and ended with 12. Then i pulled the plug. Because i had only a few cars left (only 2-door cars) i threw everything that was 4-doors away. Including new doors.
In Holland there is no market for 131's, only 124 spiders. And frankly, i get disgusted by the fact that 131 parts, mainly engine parts, are build into 124 spiders to make a f**king Abarth replica. Even the guy i sold the gearbox to was building one. But he needed a strong gearbox and mine was gathering dust, so i sold it. Yes, against my principals. But again, i need money.
Speeking of the grille for example, i bought a new one in 1988 for 140 Gulden. That's 140 Euro's today. 3 Gulden is 1 Euro!!! Which makes it the same price today.
I can understand that some prices are crazy for some people, like yourself Pedja. But in other parts in the world it is normal. The world is unfair sometimes  ;)

Talking of the sport grills I remember Ricambio in Banstead, Surrey, telling me he was selling them new in 1980 for ?110 each which has got to be at least ?330 in todays money.

ideally, i'd be happy if my cars were worth nothing. well ok, 100e for 131 in good condition. then gearbox would be 10quid, engine 25, dual carbs manifold 15 etc

Ok so you some of you want to make money on 131 parts ??
There is a company in the uk who has been trying to sell various 131 stuff for 2 years at least now on UK ebay.
One of these items is a 131 Abarth gearbox without the bellhousing it is just stripped & re-assembled is selling for about ?300 and guess what ? 2 years down the line !! "its still for sale"
What everyone forgets is that the 131 tc engine and gearbox was a very popular conversion for many Morris Minor conversions & kitcar/ hill climb car conversions in the UK they are still being used in Morris Minors today they are not rare !
The 131 rotted but a lot of the engines & gearboxes still survive, so in the UK at least, the 131 Abarth & SuperMirafiori gearbox are not worth ?300 !!!
They come up regular on UK ebay for ?80 - ?100 so if any of you want to pay that sort of money when you can get them in the UK at half the price then fair enough  :o

Post by: david on March 11, 2011, 08:46:51 PM
What they are worth doesn't bother me as I have had 131's since I bought my first supermirafiori in march 1987 and when they were worth next to nothing but I always liked the way they drove so stayed with them.
Also spent over ?3000 for parts and spray job restoring a 1980 sport in 1990 when there was little interest in these cars.
I still have a 131 sport and am staying with it as I know if I sell it I will regret it.

Alright, the buyer picked up the gearbox. And told me he was interested in the 2L engine i have as for spare. It's from an Argenta 120 i.e. Already sold the injection system to Stathe174  :D ;)
So next question is: What is a fair price for this engine?

Title: Re: Price gearbox Racing/Sport
Post by: Robert on March 15, 2011, 03:40:50 PM
Argenta pistons are high compression if I remember right. However what counts is the mileage. With or without head? Engine block, without head and usable without rebore/honing, mileage under 100k, I would consider 300 a fair price. The value is definitely higher than that of a standard 2000TC with flat pistons which I would value at 200 max (without head). Don't know valve dimensions of Argenta engine, assume they are smaller than 130TC? Then a fair price for the head would be 100 to 120.

This is my idea of fair prices. On ebay they might get more, but you cannot count on that. I've seen complete 2000TC engines go for 100 to 700 Euros, first price is ridiculous and second price is high (for standard engines without rebuilt heads or other gimmicks).

Post by: mirafiori76 on March 15, 2011, 04:21:33 PM
It's block + head. Don't know milage but it runs fine. Used this engine in my replica.

Mike if you need the injection I can sell it back to you at a fraction of the gearbox price: 300 is it good enough? :D :D :D :D :D
Seriously now why I have the feeling that the 120ie is actually running better than the standart twincam?
