Title: Engine removal
Post by: keiran on October 20, 2011, 05:29:13 PM
Hello all,

Need to pick peoples brains again.
I am taking the engine and gearbox out to get into the engine bay properly.
What I need to know is it easier to take it out all in one go or split then engine and gearbox and take the engine out and drop the gearbox out the bottom?

Thanks Keiran

I usually lift it all out together if you have suitable lifting equipment. Bonnet off, radiator out, propshaft off, exhaust disconnected, disconnect all wires, pipes and cables, undo engine and gearbox mounts and lift out. Simples ;)

Sometimes it's handy to support the gearbox with a trolley jack.

Both options are good! first take out gearbox and then the engine it's easy to handle,

I always remove the gear lever extension housing and refit it later, it makes manouvering the whole assembly much easier. The last time I had to remove an engine and box, I jacked up the front of the car and using a trolley jack I lowered the cross member with engine, box and suspension all intact. It was all being transferred to another body so it was easier all in one piece.
