The heat from the vents goes directly on it and helps deteriorate the covering material. If you don't drive the car for some weeks/months, the surface gets sticky and you have black rubber (or whatever it is, don't want to think about it) on your hand. I just detested this piece of rubbish.
My car has a gearstick from Fiat 124 Spider and an aluminum knob off ebay (yes, a ?1 article). Looks good, feels good. The knob i exchanged today doesn't have this problem...yet :D
