Title: Replacement Ignition Leads
Post by: kev131 on July 18, 2012, 02:39:50 PM
Anyone had any experience of this product/brand and if it is a suitable/worthwhile upgrade for the Super 2000 engine...?

One of the best in the business.

Whether you will notice a great deal of difference over leads such as Bosch etc though I'm not sure.

A good product though if you wish to spend that much.

Do you know of a Bosch supplier Dave - I'm not brand loyal for a product like this - Just want a good product at a reasonable price... :)

The last set I got were just from my local motor factors. They had to order them I think but came in a day or two. Can't remember exactly how much they cost I'm guessing around ?25 for the set.

I'll ask my 4 suppliers i use if and what brand they can get and cost too.

My dad used NGK performance  leads in his standard S3 for years and they were perfect.

Worth spending the extra for quality in my opinion especially for those 3ma trips at sprited driving!

I had Magnecor performance leads in my Tipo 16v and would 2nd the quality.

One rule with respect to plug leads:

Always use the ones with real copper wire leads. Anything else works for a short time and has a tendency to fail. Also it is not capable to conduct as well as real copper.

Remember this was the kind of plug leads originally used on all DOHC Fiat engines when this engine was build and produced. All elements of the ignition (including the electronic ignition , when it was developed for this engine, assumed a real copper wire.

I never use anything else.

Copper wire ignition leads are obviously the best but also illegal for street use in the UK unless suppressed spark plug caps are used  :-[ Mind you, there's little chance anyone will find out unless your neighbors complain of interference every time you start your engine  ;D

SURPRISE , SURPRISE ..

COPPER WIRES ILLEGAL  IN THE OLDEST  DEMOCRACY ?

I am shocked , and do not understand why anyone would make it illegal.

Bureaucrats all over the world are the same and - if given the power to do so - will dictate us what shoes to wear (not to mention underwear).

I would like to hear the reasoning.  Is it as 19th century  as wintertime ?

Interference : I have copper wires on all of my 5  cars and have zero interference with anything (neighbors complain about the noise the my 131 and 124 spider makes when I start it at 8 am on Sunday  ( I have max legal limit of 98 dB) but I have not noticed any interference with radio or TV  at all. I use plugs with resistors , but this is because of my ham radio and intercom powered from cars electric system...

Can you tell me what is the reasoning for banning copper wires , please

Miro

The UK "oldest democracy"?  ??? The UK didn't exist and people here were living in caves when the Greeks invented democracy!  ;)

Please read my post again Miro in which I said: "illegal for street use in the UK unless suppressed spark plug caps are used". It's not the copper wire that's illegal but the electrical interference it creates. You say you use copper wires but then you have to use resistor spark plugs so what you gain in the copper wire you then loose inside the spark plug. I'd agree that copper wires with resistor plugs is slightly better for performance (but worse for electrical noise suppression)  than resistor wires with non-resistor plugs but the difference is minor and I think not really worth it for normal street use.

Thotos

I meant oldest modern Democracy,  ;D

(Actually I am a great fun of the Greek ancient democracy!

It was a direct democracy and not for everybody (but only the educated, wealthy free citizens !!!)

I made mine from wire. I can't listen to AM radio, but FM is fine. Whether they're illegal or not is irrelevant, no-one is going to bother checking what sort of spark plug leads I have on a 30 year old Fiat.

I have been racing with Magnecor for last eight years. First in my Fiat rallycar, then in my track BMW. Never had any problems. Superb quality, and they make custom cables in reasonable price. Forexample I changed my coil to MSD. I just e-mailed the length and terminal specs, and in couple of weeks I had cable in car and running. Earlier the Peugeot had them in kitcars, atleast in promotional pics.

Still looking for a good set. I sourced two sets made by Beru...especially imported from Germany by the Irish Distributor (based on the car model) but they turned out to be too short. They need to be c70cm long.

Tried my local motor factors leaving my telephone number but never heard back from them. ::)

Any other suggestions aside from the ultra expensive Magnecor...? :)

I got mine from ebay and they are very good (8mm silicone) but I can't see them advertised right now. HotWires by Lemark are very good and you buy those individually so you get the exact sizes you need. I used to have those on the 131 and they were fine and they are now still in use on my Trevi  ;D For the Gamma I got Bosch 8mm leads from a local garage (my usual MOT test centre in fact). Once again they had a selection of different lengths and I bought the lengths I needed. Good leads are important on the Gamma because two of them are about 10cm long and the other two are about 100cm long!
