Title: Fiat 131 Lubricants
Post by: kev131 on July 19, 2012, 06:14:08 PM
I need to get some oils for the new 131 and I did some research on here and in a Haynes manual.

For the diff, Haynes reccomends SAE 90EP although I recall a debate where EP was advised against. What brand/grade do people normally buy?

For the manual gearbox, Haynes says Oliofiat ZC90 or 80W/90 oil. Again what do people normally buy?

And Dot 3 for brake fluid?

Thanks

Engine oil Castrol GTX 15/40

I used the same in the gearbox :)

For the diff EP90. It's the gearbox you shouldn't use EP in.

As for the brake fluid I used DOT 5.1. DOT 3 or 4 should be fine. I would change it totally to be safe.

Millers make very good gear oils :)

http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_odkw=millers+diesel&_osacat=0&_trksid=p2045573.m570.l1313&_nkw=millers+80W%2F90+&_sacat=0

You will find most motor factors have Dot 4 this has replaced Dot 3.

Kevin,

The fact is that all modern oils are very good, but when you push your engine this is when you need the best.

I use of Motul  all around : bake fluid (dot 5.1), engine oil, gear box oil, diff oil). Only for coolant I use original Fiat Paraflu

For gear box and non LSD diff I use the one with molybdenum additive - it stinks bad but this is the best there is. For Engine I use 300V competition 15-w50 synthetic. Magnificent. Brake fluid is 5.1 ( with the highest temperature resistance in industry).

Note that Motul is a small operation as compared to its Big brand name competitors. The difference is they really make their own instead of subcontracting all kinds of  refineries all around the world which just add additives to their own base oil-  and here comes out a Castrol, Elf or Mobil.

As they say "never drink a whisky from a distillery that makes zillion of bottles"
Such volume is always for everyone. This means for average user and average use.
Very good , but not for extreme conditions and extreme use.

So ultimately the choice of oil is defined by the use. If you use it like most average users any oil is fine.
If you run your engine frequently over 8K RPM at high temperatures, brake very hard , shift quickly and always ether accelerate full throttle and brake at full force the average will not be enough.

Dot 5.1 is compatable with previous mineral fluids such as DOT 3 and DOT4.

However as said earlier I would change it completely. Brake fluid should be changed every two years as part of the service schedule.

Unfortunately it seldom is and if you buy a secondhand car it's likely to have very old fluid in it ::)

Dot 5  =  synthetic   Requires complete flush and change

Dot 5.1 = is normal fluid    Just bleed through to replace.
