It's the electronic ignition module. Are you sure it's gone wrong? Car wouldn't work at all if that's gone wrong. They don't often go wrong but the wire that goes from there to the distributor always go wrong.
Title: Re: Capacitor Post by: kev131 on October 10, 2012, 07:59:10 PM Thanks Theo - Is the wire being referred to called the Ignition Pick up lead ? If yes, that has been replaced.
The car is running - It's just a reccomended replacement by the garage while the car is undergoing other preventative maintenance work. :) Maybe this is it....although there are lots of options. I'll drop them a line... http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=290623518155 Title: Re: Capacitor Post by: Thotos on October 10, 2012, 08:25:10 PM Is the wire being referred to called the Ignition Pick up lead ? Yes it is and they always go wrong so it's a good idea to replace it before it leaves you stranded somewhere. The main problem is that the insulation of the pick-up wires inside the distributor hardens with heat and eventually breaks due to being bent back and forth by the centrifugal advance mechanism. But the ignition modules rarely go wrong and I wouldn't change it as "preventative maintenance". If you do, then you should also replace the coil as it's more likely to go wrong. In fact I'm not sure if the ignition module is available on its own or if you'll have to buy the complete unit of module, heatsink and coil. Ricambio (http://www.ricambio.co.uk) would probably be your best bet for getting one of these. Title: Re: Capacitor/Module Post by: jasonh131 on October 10, 2012, 08:47:37 PM ?35 on ebay ..

I agree with thotos that it's mostly the wiring in the distributor. 99 % of 100 that's the problem.
Title: Re: Capacitor/Module Post by: idahobrava on October 11, 2012, 02:42:15 AM I agree with some of the other posts on your ignition module. I had similar problem with what I thought was a module going bad, it was the wiring from the coil that had corroded and the wiring connectors were cracked and I was loosing spark and the car would die. I built new leads and the problem stopped. I did also find that the distributor pickup from the module was also bad from the insulation coming off the wires, it was also replaced. So far so good, about 5000 miles since the fix and still running strong. The module is also a very common GM part in the USA and very inexpensive, I carry a spare in the car just in case it ever fails. Mike Stinson
