Title: Uprating to power steering
Post by: longhamrob on November 13, 2012, 01:35:44 PM
Has anyone any experience of converting a 131R to power steering?  Can it be done?

I am putting power steering into one of my 131's, it can be done :) If you could get a rotten 131 2000/TC S3 as it would have all the power steering parts that you would need. I have only ever seen power steering fitted to twin cam engines.

Its a nice power steering that was used on the 131's :)

it can be done alright .. as said above you will need all the related power steering parts from a series 3 twin cam 131 ... including front crank pulley . steering column unit as its shorter than the normal and also the cross member as the mounting points for the steering rack are in a slightly different position..
discovered the cross member was slightly different one saturday afternoon when converting my sport many years ago..

I did the opposite ! took it off my series 3 and put a sport rack on and and lower column , hated power steering on a 131 ...

Dont know if this will help but the 1980 131 TC we have for sale has power steering on it, acording to the old boy that had it from new it was fitted by the dealer from new for him ( he still had the manual rack ;D,) if you get stuck and need to see something as a reference. it is a left hooker though if that makes a difference. I've seen this car the other day and I was looking at the power steering conversion and I couldn't tell that it wasn't original. Unfortunately you can't see much in my photo below. From what I could see, you'll need all the power steering components (i.e. rack, steering column, pump, crank pulley, fluid reservoir, pipework) but also a new oil filter housing as it sits at an angle to make room for the power steering pump.

I've never heard of PS on a series 2 car. As far as I am aware the first version to get it was the Supermirafiori 2000 (and not the 1600/1400 Super versions).

If this was a later model S2 the components must have been available to buy separately from the launch of the S3....or maybe the first owner/garage knew somebody at Fiat..... :)

Hi Kev, would like to shed some light on it for you but the old boy just told us it was fitted by the dealer from new, as were the rear seat belts and rear sun shields? G

The other option is to fit some electric power steering. I know that Fiat seicento is using power steering that has it's own control box for thish you need to supply +12V and a switch that will turn it on when you want(or connect it to ignition key switch) and that is it. THe only problem will be to fit it all under the dash but it should be possible. It is quite efficient as we used it in seicento 140hp rally car with quck steering and it was fine. there are two versions available LHD and RHD they differ with the electric motor on the other side.
