Title: Sunday August Bank holiday at Phil & Tansy
Post by: Phil on May 17, 2014, 09:07:30 PM
We are planning to have a little get together on Sunday 24th August (having first consulted with A & A!) and everyone is welcome

We have a basic plan worked out, but will confirm details later, we will most probably meet near Colchester at a cafe for breakfast / coffee, then we will take a nice country drive back to ours, via a lunch stop, for dinner, beer, wine etc  ;D

Just updating dates for events in my diary and calendar - Phil, do we have any more details?  ;D Might be useful if you could point us in the direction of some local accommodation too please as otherwise I won't be able to avail myself of the excellent hospitality that you and your Dear Wife Tansy have to offer. 8) ;D

Just back from holiday - how do I always find a holiday spot with rubbish internet ???

if you pay upfront Premier Inn are offering a family room for ?40 a night, it's only about 5 miles away so not too expensive a taxi ride and I will pick up people in the morning and bring you all back for breakfast.

The link is below.

http://www.premierinn.com/en/checkHotel/CLABOW/clacton-on-sea-north/colchester-road

Travel lodge in Clacton are offering a room at ?55

http://www.travelodge.co.uk/hotels/405/Clacton-on-Sea-Central-hotel

Now that I am back I will now start working on the details for the day, the format will be similar to last year, seeing a different bit of Essex / Suffolk.

Tansy & I did the recce drive yesterday, all went well. :o

The meeting point on Sunday 24th August at about 10am is:

The Jubilee
Old London Road
Ardleigh
CO7 7QJ

On a Sunday they open at 10am, and do one of the best breakfasts you'll ever eat, Tansy and I will definitely be tucking in on the day ;D they also do great coffee  8)

http://www.foodanddrinkguides.co.uk/colchester/the-jubilee-restaurant/restaurant/4797/#.U7gjN7HrxNY

I have checked on google maps and the post code is correct, if you're coming from London on the A12 you need to be careful on the A12 Ardleigh / Colchester junction. You leave the A12, go onto the roundabout then you need to take the slip-road for the A120, but turn off left immediately (go slowly if you miss the road you end up in Clacton ???). If there are signs for Ardleigh car boot sale follow them & drive past to The Jubilee  ;)

After breakfast a nice drive through some country lanes to a photo opportunity  8)

Just pretend the car's a Fiat and the sun is shining  ;)

Looks great Phil and Tansy! Can't wait! 8)

My 131 of choice for this run will probably be my yellow 1600 Special, although I might press the orange one into service if persuaded!  ;D Wendy and I took the girls out in the yellow S today to meet Andy and Nita C for lunch in Midhurst, W. Sussex, a round trip for us of some 65 miles, and it's fair to say that '4-up' the 1600 ohv struggles a little - especially on the hills  :-\ so I hope your planned route is quite flat  ;D (We had a  most delicious lunch by the way, a pub that we shall most definitely be going to again!).

Talking of lunch, looks like that lunch-stop sandwich is less than the ?15 minimum of last year Phil.  ;)

Essex & Suffolk don't really do hills - more like hillocks  ;D

On feed-back from last year, we test drove the food as well as the route this year, ?15 buys 2.5 sandwiches ;)

My 131's "liberation" and of course the picture was yesterday  ;) I'll post another pic after I've washed and lubed  ;D

I've been watching the Belgian GP free practices and qualifying at Spa and remembering my hour and a half session round the track in the Gamma and remeber thinking "I wish I was doing this in the 131"  ;D  ;D

Kev, you'll have to wait until M2M to find out whether it's me or the 131  ;) :D ;D

Theo, if you don't stop hijacking 131 posts with pictures of your Gamma I'll have to consider banning you from this site.  ;) :D :D

Just checking the address of The Jubilee against Google Maps and the link above posted by Phil and there's a difference in the road name -

Both Google and the site link state it as 'Old Ipswich Road' and not 'Old London Road'. The postcode is correct though. ;D

Sorry, I think the road has two names, I think the proper name is "Old Ipswich Road" as per google maps.

Surely you know that's the wrong thing to say to me as it'll only encourage me to post more Gamma photos  ;D But just to keep you happy, here's some photos of the 131 after the wash and polish this afternoon just as sunny Enfield became a very wet Enfield  >:(  Didn't those lovely Lancia Beta alloys clean up well!  ;) ;D It's a shame my spare set of Gamma alloys don't fit otherwise I could have got a few pics of Gamma bits in with the 131  ;D ;D ;D

After an extremely wet and slow drive around the M25 we are back home safe and sound after a warm and welcoming weekend in Essex. ;D

I found a new 131 'trick' - open the drivers window a little in driving rain and the water comes around the top of the screen and runs down the inside right in the driver's line of sight - wind the window up again and water stops  ;D Novel  :D ;) Got to love a 131! :-*

Thanks to Phil and Tansy, not only for the run and meal on Sunday but for also letting me, Wendy and Shannon stay the night and for a great breakfast this morning! 8)

See most of you again in ten days or so for M2M! ;D

A BIG thank you to Phil and Tansy for a great day, a wonderful driving route and superb dinner. We all met at the Jubilee Pub in Ardleigh near Colchester for a full and hearty breakfast and then onto Alton Water in Stutton for a photo opportunity. Next it was on to The Shipwreck at Shotley Gate Marina for beverages, lunch and ice cream and our end destination was at Phil & Tansy's in St Osyth. See you in Ireland in 10 days!

A big thank you to everyone for making me feel welcome yesterday, especially to Jason for waiting for me and being my guide on the first outing in my Fiat in 20 years. I had a great maiden voyage driving around some beautiful essex/suffolk country lanes and it was really nice to finally meet up with everyone and put faces (and cars) to names.
Thanks very much to Theo for taking some great pics, i'm looking forward to our next meet, just sorry i can't make Ireland. I'm sure you'll all have a great time and i'll be looking forward to seeing some great pics and posts. Hope it doesn't rain too much.
