Title: timing
Post by: finnie on October 02, 2014, 08:28:20 PM
Hi Guys
Stayed late in workshop tonight and wanted to set timing on my 2 litre engine old fashion style with the bulb but got confused on how !
Do you connect the bulb across the coil or ? and is not when light goes out that it fires the plug ? on no. 4
Can anybody point me in the direction of a diagram ?
Can you tell I`m confused  :D

Thanks

Old school....
You need to know the static advance (mark on your crankshaft pulley)
Not sure for the 2.0 but 10 degrees before TDC on UK models.
Put your crankshaft in this position (this could be cyl. 1 or 4 but that doesn't matter)
Connect the bulb as per attached diagram, one side to earth the other one is the wire to your distributor (breaker Points)
You want them to open at this 10 degrees before TDC
so loosen the base plate of your breaker slightly and turn in the opposite shaft turning direction  untill the light goes on, then secure base plate (Static advance is now 10 degrees btdc)
Make sure that the max gap (0.4-0.5 mm) is according to specs

PS Forgett the base plate story...
That is for bikes without distibutor
In this case I guess you loosen the distributor and slightly turn untill the light just goes on, then fasten the distributor.

(I have to admitt, this is a long time ago)
