Title: Iron cross wheels

Hello,

Just wanted a few opinions on what tire size are appropiate for this kind of wheel? They are 13X5.5 and all 5 wheels are in excellent condition. I want to send them out to get re-finished and would like to install the widest tire possible, without having rubbing issues. Right now there is 165/80/13 installed on them ("pizza slicers") as we call them here.

Or should i shop for some 14" or 15"?

Hi, I have a set of 13" wheels 5.5j wide for the 131 and they are fitted with 185/65 R13 tyres which suit it really well. No rubbing issues either, and also a nicer profile. Although I have the same wheel with a 205/50 R13 tyre fitted which is very wide looking but in my opinion the 185 tyre looks alot better and suits the wheel better.

13" was the standard wheel size for most Fiat 131s with 14" an option on some of the sportier versions. I have seen many 131s with 15" wheels and even some with wheels as large as 17". Tyre size will obviously depend on your chosen wheel size but you have to be careful if you want your speedometer to show a reasonably accurate speed! Changing the overall diameter of your wheels will change the accuracy of your speedometer.

I think 165x80 R13 should be replaced by 185x70 R13 to keep a similar sidewall size (approximately 5.3" for the 80 profile and 5.1" for the 70 profile).  If you go up to 14" wheels then you'll need 185x60 R14 giving a sidewall of  approximately 4.5 inches (but you gain an inch in the wheel diameter and therefore half an inch added to the sidewall).  If you go to 15" wheels, then you should go for 195x55 R15 tyres (sidewall approximately 4.2") or 195x50 R15 (sidewall approximately 3.9"). But remember that there's little room inside the rear wheel arches of a 131 and if you go for extra-wide tyres or wheels with the wrong offset you'll end up with the tyres rubbing inside the rear arches.

If Kevin does read this post, I was wondering if the centre coves were originally painted black like the ones I have, and if so,did you just decide to paint the complete rim that shade of gray, or did they come like that?

I'm not sure I understand the word "coves".? ???

If you are referring to the 4 sections with a triangular end where they meet the bolt housings I dont think that I have every seen them painted grey. I've only ever seen the wheel, made either by Speedline or Cromadora, in a single colour, ie silver. I believe the design is based on a wheel fitted to the group 4 Abarth rally cars although NOT of the same dimensions..

Please let us know how you get on with the reburbishment - It took 3 months to finally get mine right but I now have a full set awaiting the completion of some mechanical jobs before I fit them.

As a matter of interest, why do you call them Iron Cross Wheels? Is this your interpretation... or an official name for this design?

Hello Kev,

Yes proablly not the best word to describe what i was referring too, ;) but yes the four triangular indents, as shown in the picture above they were also painted a matte black, as the rest of the rim was a silver finish.  I might just refinish the wheel the same way as i would like to change the body colour of this one to a sametone of black ??? ??? I think. But this bronze /copper colour is kind of growing on Me.

I'm pretty sure that this wheel pattern was named "iron cross" and yes was made by speedline and cromadora as an option wheel for 1980-82 124's 131's and X/19's here  in North America. I've found a chart on the mirafiori.com web page that lists the wheels fiat used.

And yes Kev, I will surley keep you and the others posted on the refurbishing stages once they get under way, and will get some before and after pictures to post.

Hi FIATCAN - I came across these pictures recently which show the paint treatemnt that I think you were referring to. Looks like it was just for the US market. I hope that the pictures help you decide what finish to go for.
