Title: Cars, cars, wonderful cars (but no 131s)...
Post by: Thotos on May 12, 2007, 06:16:00 PM
As some of you already know, my car loyalties are somewhat divided and while I have the highest admiration and appreciation for the Fiat 131, there are other cars that I really  like. One of them is the Lancia Gamma. In fact I have owned my Gamma Coupe for 11 years which is longer than my current 131 Sport, although my 131 ownership started in 1978 and I have owned at least one 131 ever since.

A few months ago I was reading a copy of Auto Italia magazine that had an article about MITOMACCHINA, an "exhibition of automotive design excellence" which was on display at the modern art museum MART in Roverto in Northern Italy. What especially attracted my attention was the fact that within the many prototypes on display the exhibition included the 1978 Lancia Megagamma by Giorgetto Giugaro! The Megagamma, which as the name implies was based on the Lancia Gamma, was the first "monospace" or "people carrier" car, a type  which eventually became popular with Renault's Espace.

The exhibition opened on December 2nd 2006 and closed on May 1st 2007. So in late April I took a short trip to Northern Italy to see the exhibition. As well as the Megagamma there were other prototypes like the Maserati Boomerang which I simply had to see but also wonderful cars like the Fiat X1/99, a Punto based sportscar designed as a possible modern day replacement for the X1/9, which I knew little about but was very interesting to see.

My complete holiday snaps (warts and all) are available to view at http://www.ThoLiMo.co.uk/Rovereto where you can see lots of photos of lots of interesting cars. You can skip all my other snaps taken while driving round Lake Garda ....
