Title: Best 131 Racing in the World
Post by: c.a.c131 on April 13, 2013, 09:35:18 PM
I been very lucky to have seen the restoration on this 131 Racing over the last few years, and have never seen a nut & bolt rebuild like this one & I am very fussy when it comes to 131?s, it left me spellbound today. This is the first time I see it in the metal now it?s totally done.

Hoping to get up to  see this car myself over the next few weeks.. I was lucky enough to get a  peak or two
at it last year while the build was going on .. some amazing work & detail gone into this 131 Racing..

This really is better than new..
Nick is in a class of his own...  ;)

I like the white side cornering lights, pity the front ones are still orange. Are them from Turkey too? Do you have white front indicators?

I'm slobbering here.
Why is the 'Racing' name tag on the back? It looks like an Irish car so why not MirafioriSport?

Rich the last of these type of 131's sold in Ireland were called Racing and not Mirafiori Sport. It's the right badge for this Irish 131, if it was a UK car it would be Mirafiori Sport.

Here is a photo of a Irish 131 in a fiat dealer in 1981/2 ? this photo was taken by a member on this forum back in the day, maybe they can tell us the right year the photo was taken ?

I was taken out for a good drive in 79 KZO today ;D it?s a very fast 131 Racing & the LSD is some job. A few photo?s taken today :)

You great big fecker. How did u manage that?

Fantastic   :-*  although IMHO, I'd lose the rear screen grid.  :-\ Knocks the whole car out for me.

Now lads the rear window louvre was on this Racing 30 years ago when the guy that fully rebuild every nut and bolt on it first seen 79 KZO parked in his local town in 1983 :) so it was always going to be on this Racing when it was fully rebuild (same louvre in the photo's when it was rotten but it was silver)

The louvre's only sit on the rear window and can be removed in minutes so can the clock and badges, it's his car he rebuild every nut and bolt on it and can put what ever he wants on it !

I am very fussy when it come to rust, poor repairs and isopon on the body on a 131, I have never seen a rebuild like the job that has been done on this 131 Racing.

I have seen 131's that have not been rebuilt to the standard of this Racing and they have not had any Negative comments why is that ?

You are dead right. It's very rare that one would see such a transformation from what it was to what it is now. I think everyone would be in agreement that it really is astonishing, could easily sit in the Fiat museum and humble any other car that that may be in there. TBH, I don't know how he has even done it. It's a work of genius and pure dedication.

Re the louvre, it is my humble opinion that it takes away from the look of the car. Does my bum look big in this? I assume it was originally something like a Halfords aftermarket accessory and not a Fiat factory fit? If so, I'll stand corrected.  If it wasn't on it when it left the factory, I personally wouldn't have put it back on during the rebuild. It draws too much attention away from the rest of the beauty.

Maybe his first sight of a 131 sport all those years ago had a louvre on it so that's what he is re-creating. If that's the case, then may the force be with him. I wouldn't say they weren't negative comments generally but more constructive criticism is order to maintain perfection personified. Just my 2c worth.

PS - Why did it originally have a diesel hump on the bonnet?

"PS - Why did it originally have a diesel hump on the bonnet?"

I have heard of a few 131 Racing's that had the diesel bonnet fitted new or nearly in Ireland, 79 KZO and 2 others, I have a friend that worked in a Fiat dealer back in the day and a customer that had ordered a new Racing had to have it fitted with a diesel bonnet :) I am sure they were more fitted with them back in the day in Ireland, to make their 131 Racing look more Racing ;D

I was fortunate enough to have had the privilege to not only see this masterpiece last Saturday but got the chance to SIT in it as well.
If it was mine, I wouldn't even let ME in to it.

I ended up with the head staggers and a nose bleed from shaking my head so much in dis-belief. Couldn't take my eyes off it. I pinched myself to make sure I wasn't dreaming.

Besides the perfection of the finished product, I am just as much gobsmacked not only by the level of detail gone in to the restoration (every nut and bolt)
but also by the amount of time, energy, dedication and commitment that obviously went in to it since first acquiring the car. I'm sure there is probably some gold plating protecting some part of it unseen by the casual observer.  :P

Unfortunately he had his highly trained guard dog watching over the car (Christopher) so I couldn't kidnap (or should that be carnap) and make off with it.
If I manage to win the lottery at any stage, I'll hire some burglar and make use of his services. :-)

Thanks to Chris and Nick for allowing me the opportunity and all I can say is a tug of the forelock to Nick for what he has achieved.  8)

And I've placed an order for one for me.

Sorry to poke in here lads but , I have seen this car both before & after the rebuild & the transformation has been unbelievable...
The quality of the rebuild is second to none & although the rear axel & master cyclinder are not original fiat, the parts Nick used are way ahead of the factory units...
I have been in many a road going 131 sport/racing in my time & I would have to say in my opinion this car out-drives & out-handles any I have sat in before...
Plenty of guys on here have uprated their brake disc's ,pads ,wheels, lights etc to non original 131 parts, this only helps to improve the quality of the cars we love ..
This car with it's improvements is without doubt the way Fiat should have built them  ...
This 131 is completely rust free and is justified in the using the heading.................... 'Best 131 Racing'...

Outstanding car. Everybody can make their cars as they wish. There is absolutely nothing wrong with this! Its done with good taste and tech seem to be improved in places it really needs improving. So IMHO, its very very nice car.  :D

Like.
My 131 has a Holden diff, Mazda lights & a Delco Ford V8 starter motor.
This all adds up to, It cranks over & starts like you would not get from the Marrelli unit. It can tow & do burnouts & you can see while doing it in the dark.
Don't listen to em mate.
My Toyota has Ford wheels, Dellorto carbs & Holden seats.
My Ford is all Ford, right down to the floor mats, but it is still a Ford  :-[

Hi thank you POQ131 any pics of the holden set up is it lsd & whats the final drive ratio?
also the starter motor info appreciated, i will be changing my crown wheel & pinion to 3.9:1 when i get my finger out & replace the diff in my ta23 with the 4.1:1 diff i got for it last year, its 3.9 at the mo both are T series 6.7" axles ;)

Sounds intresting, I have a Holden (HSV) as well but it does have approx 640 horses going through the diff, but would love to have the details of what you have used on the 131.......... 8)

Hi sid. No pics & the car is garaged at our house in town So I can't get some right now.
The diff is from an LC Holden Torana which has a 161 or 186 cubic inch six cylinder driving it. Normal coil over trailing arm live axle set up with all the Holden mounts cut off & all the 131 mounts welded on. Bearing retainer - caliper mount plates machined up for the ends & axle flanges welded stud holes & re machined to take 132 Fiat rear calipers & discs. Looks like it belongs there.  This diff was chosen (even though there are likely better out there) because of ratio, wheel track & commonness here in Australia. Holden used this centre in all six cylinder models from 1964 till 1980. It was also a relatively simple matter to fit the brakes & make a pinion yoke that bolted up my original prop/drive shaft. All machining & fitting by myself.
There is limited slip centres available (used to have one in a 1974 Holden HJ) but mine is open.
the ratio is 3.55 : 1 & the 131 Super Brava original was 3.58 : 1. Holden also made these centres in 3.36 : 1, 3.08 : 1 & 2.79 : 1.
I have 14 inch 132 wheels that look the same as the Brava wheels after I cut the slot holes in them. Tyres are 14" 195x65 firestone &the speedo/odometer is spot on to the k.

Coppers got me clocked on radar at 115kph & its sweet spot is 115 k right where I was cruising.

Without doubts theeeeeee best 131 in the world , 1000 times better than the day it left the showroom.  A very talented man with a passion and pride in his trade.
Money could not buy the likes of it as it's taken many years of blood and sweat not to mention the painstaking locating and gathering all the parts for the beauty.

I had the pleasure of seeing the car a few weeks back and 50 shades of grey is now only 1 lovely shade of grey now.

Keep up the good work Sid

Not to put down on a stunning Fiat 131 but these Alley cat alloys don't do nothing for it but that's my opinion.
I'm sure many will disagree but there is something not quite right about the look, the car looks stunning in the gun metal grey the stance is just right but the gold BBS style wheels don't look at home on it.
Sid I hope you take this as constructive criticism!! As you know how much I think of what you have done with it.

Hi Angus no worries i just restored the alley cats to their original gold colour but i cant really warm to them ;D
I have those 15" revolutions to play with this year but my faves are the 13" 4 spoke revolutions ;D
i have a set of original 131 alloy wheels which are also in the process of getting restored also ;)

What motor in the silly car ?
O.
what silly car you on about lad?
Sorry mate, you don't know the Celica as a silly car. Say Sillycar Celicar, must be an Aussie thing.
Interested what motor you have in the Celica because I have a couple Toyota Hilux RN41's. One with an 18RG.
O.

If you ever get board fit the original steels in the silver and black paint it will look stunning! but as you know Sid, that's where we never agree  :) you think alloys belong on the Sport but I think the original steels look best.

We got 13" alloys here in Eire as original Angus ye got 14" steel wheels over yonder  ;)

Lol! You are right but I don't mind 13" or 14" steels, they still look the same.
I still think the racing/sport looks best in its own 70's/80's retro steel's

Hi Again.
The best way to get a second driver is have open  drive. Anyone over 30 can drive any of my 5 Classics once they have a full licence ;). If you can't get a driver I will bring a spare
driver who can drive Goldie and I will drive one of your Cars ;D 8) ???. The only thing the
power would probably scare the life out of me. So I think I will withdraw my offer :) ;D.

not figure why People were saying it was difficult ;). As a matter of face I seem to spend
more time on the right side of the road than I do with the White Lady ;D. Maybe it is just
I am getting in age ???.
