Title: M2M13140
Post by: kev131 on November 04, 2013, 08:52:46 PM
M2M13140 ? What does it mean? Well this is how the Irish lads who love their 131s are celebrating the Mirafiori?s 40th anniversary in 2014. Malin and Mizen are popular classic car touring destinations in Ireland and represent the most Northerly and most Southerly points of our beautiful island. The quickest route between the two is 674 kms via Dublin but for this trip we will taking two lesiurely days to make the trip taking in some of the sights of the western seaboard, overnighting in Galway. In addition, for those who want to make it a longer event, there are two optional additional days, before and after M2M13140, which offer the opportunity to further explore Ireland?s rugged and unique coastline.

Having been involved with over half a dozen 131 themed events since 2007, I get the feeling that this event could easily beat our best ever turnout for 131s and I?ll be very disappointed if this is not the best and biggest 131 event so far. Support from Irish owners alone so far has been overwhelming and personally I?d love to see as many of our international 131 friends come to Ireland next year as possible. Our target of 40 131s might seem challenging but it's certainly not impossible.

This is Christopher Conlon?s (C.A.C131) idea first proposed over a year and half ago and between the two of us it is well into the planning stages. All of the hotels have been selected and having stayed in all of them, I can vouch for the fact that noone will be disappointed with the level of service or facilities. They are all either 3 or 4 star, two of which offer views of the Atlantic Ocean while the third is the scene of the very first 3MA in 2007 in Killarney. All of the rates are competitive and all include dinner B&B.

Over the next few months, more and more detail will be revealed but for now, the most important matter is to note the dates for your holiday calendar next year. The event will be run from 5th to 8th September 2014 inclusive and follows the 3MA model closely except insofar that we have three instead of one hotel.
For all of those overseas owners, I can guarantee you'll not see more of the best parts of Ireland in a similar time any other way. And what better way to do it than in your favourite car with like minded enthusiasts.  :)

I did a recce trip to Donegal (start point) in May this year and here are some teaser photos...These are all from day 1 of the event and take the driver on a tour of Inishowen peninsula. We will drive the Inishowen 100 which is a 100 mile (160kms) scenic journey around the headland and you will see everything from the photos below and much more.

This is the view from the Ballyliffen Lodge - Our stay for the first two nights.

And this is the same view at dawn the next day....

This is the beach which is a 5 minute walk from the hotel....

The next three pictures are from the Five Finger Strand. Donegal is a vast and sparsely populated on the outskirts of Europe. What many people say after a visit is that they felt as if they were the only people left in the world - You literally have it all to yourself...

(http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l250/kev131/P1200904.jpg) (http://s98.photobucket.com/user/kev131/media/P1200904.jpg.html)

Climbing above the beach to this headland reveals spectacular views of the coastline. On the day I visited this lonely looking musician was playing his violin to noone but himself and the seagulls.

Now on our way to Malin Head every corner reveals another unspoilt vista...

(http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l250/kev131/P1200934.jpg) (http://s98.photobucket.com/user/kev131/media/P1200934.jpg.html)

And to Malin itself...

Look carefully for the messages spelt out in stones...

This promises to be an excellent event and the dates are right as they are at least a week before the Gamma Consortium AGM and Rally  ;D so I'm expressing my support and my (most probable) attendance  ;) :D

Great to see a surge of interest - It's motivated me to finalise the last hotel.

Details up here soon.....

For UK and European visitors the best ports of entry are Dun Laoghaire (or Dublin) from Holyhead ...or Rosslare from Fishguard. Both crossings are under 4 hours. The ships have restaurants, cabins, bars, free Wifi, etc so it's like a mini cruise.  :)

Anyone needing help planning routes, etc, just PM me as I've done them many times in reverse. Stenaline have ongoing promotions so it's worth registering with them now to see what pops up in the coming months.

Day 2

This is when the first half of the Malin to Mizen run takes place. The run is approx 350 kms in a southerly direction taking most of the route as shown, Closer to the event we can look at a suitable mid-day scenic diversion or stop.

Any lads who know the area better than I do are most welcome to make suggestions even if you're not attending.

(http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l250/kev131/Day2-1.png) (http://s98.photobucket.com/user/kev131/media/Day2-1.png.html)

Our destination is the outskirts of Ireland's fourth largest city namely Galway. This city is situated overlooking Galway Bay and the North Clare coastline and our hotel for the night takes full advantage of the views and location. This is a four star hotel which we've used twice already for Fiat events and they really do "service". Designated parking for our group, outdoor hut tubs, pool, choice of bars and restaurants...4 star luxury and all for ?71.00 Dinner B&B per person sharing.  :)

This is probably when we will have our main night and for people intending to attend for less than the entire event, this is the one not to miss. This is also where we will take our tally of how many 131s participate to see how close to the magic 40 we can get.... ;D

Great news - I sincerely hope you won't be alone in making this trip Heini!

Hotel details will be posted tomnorrow night and each attendee needs to make their own bookings direct with the hotels.

There will be a little bit of extra work for everyone attending (compared with 3MA) as there are three different hotels catering for the 5 nights of the event. However, I will provide all contact details for each including e-mail and phone numbers and a name with whom any difficulties can be raised. I'll also be available to help anyone who has any problems... :)

Ok so that's all the hotel information. Each hotel has 25 rooms reserved.

Based on feedback so far, that may be sufficient but it might be advisable to make your booking now to avoid the inconvenience of finding no vacancies and having to stay at another hotel.

As per 3MA, each attendee books and settles their own bill with each hotel but as I said before, let me know if anyone has any difficulties and I'll do my best to help.

Where ferries are concerned, for travellers through or from the UK, it probably doesn't make difference whether you use Fishguard (to Rosslare) or Holyhead (to Dun Laoghaire - pronounced Dun Leery) .

For travellers direct from the continent, I've used Cherbourg to Rosslare many times and it's like a mini cruise. You must book a cabin as part of the crossing (as it is generally overnight). I suggest a minimum of 3 Star for comfort.

I'd love to come on this road trip, just hope it doesn't rain as mine hasn't been wet in 20 years. The Italy trip looked tempting but i'm not sure i'd be brave enough to risk taking mine on such a long journey as it's only just seen the road late last year and wouldn't want to break down so far from home, i'm sure i could push it home from Ireland though ;-)
I've asked my son to come with me and he's interested so will hopefully be able to come. I'm hoping to meet some 131 owners this year as i've had mine roadworthy since late last year but haven't met anyone or done any shows or trips in her yet apart from the Ace Cafe classic car meet in London.
Hope to see some of you soon, when the weather warms up eh?

Don't know if this will help anyone, I thought I would share the latest Stena offer.

If you book before May 26 one passenger (not the driver) goes free on ferry's to Ireland from the UK. You can travel any time for the rest of 2014.

From what I hear I think this seat may already be taken!!  :)

If you are reading this, you are probably a Mirafiori fan. If you are a Mirafiori fan, it's probably because you recognise what a great car this was in its day, and still is 40 years after it's launch.  If you are a Mirafiori fan, you are probably like me and still scratching your head as to why the Cortina outsold the Fiat by such a large margin in the 70s and 80s!  ???

As a classic car it still overshadows the 131 having multiple owner clubs, even split by version. If you want a chance to get your own back and prove that the 131 has a large following of passionate supporters, make sure you get along to the biggest event to celebrate the car's 40th anniversary and show Ford that they didn't have things all their own way!  :)

Yes it is now  ;)

still scratching your head as to why the Cortina outsold the Fiat by such a large margin in the 70s and 80s!

I'm sure the Cortina didn't outsell the 131 in Italy  ;)
Multiple owner clubs simply dilute the enthusiasm. Do Cortina owner clubs organise an annual 4 day meeting with participants from all over Europe? I doubt it. Most Cortina owners wouldn't drive their cars over 3000 Km in under a week  ;D

Perhaps all those Cortina owners should watch this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QdTZCJCkkyA (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QdTZCJCkkyA)  ;D

you can add another attendee to the list: Holger is booked for both ferry and hotels and will join us with his replica.
He has one spare seat (HINT for Heini's passengers ;))

It's great to see the bookings roll in...I'm convinced this could be the biggest and hopefully one of the best 131 gatherings that we've had to date. It makes me very proud to know that people are driving such a long way in old cars to see our beautiful home.

I've spent some time this evening putting together the summary route maps and it's very clear to me that this will be very much a whistle stop trip through Ireland and that many spectacular spots are being ignored because we just dont have enough time. Hopefully for the visitors, it will give you a taste of what Ireland has to offer and you might come again.  :)

The route itself is far too long to do the normal pre event recce so it's been created from maps and prior knowledge from both Chris and I.

Key destinations and waypoints will be marked with GPS co-ordinates so having a working and up to date Sat Nav in every car is a requirement. If the event is as successful as we hope, then the convoy will be too large to keep together at all times so having navigational aids (inlcuding a good current road map of Ireland) will help enormously. It will also allow anyone who feels like exploring destinations not on the offiical route ...or to visit their Irish ancestors from generations past...to do so and then to catch up again with the official group. The route maps will be pretty basic and the very opposite of what Robert produced in 2013 ....which had a photo of every junction...as well as the directions!!  :)

On Day two (the longest trip) there is the oiption to travel by the most direct route to the Galway hotel. The reason why some may like to do this is because it is a 4 star hotel overlooking the bay with lovely facilities. The other option is to head west to Ireland's only fjord before returning to Galway via the lakes and viewing the county's Twelve Pins (mountain range).

On Day 4 there is again an option. The attendees at 3MA07 will recall the highlight of the Healy Pass.

(http://i934.photobucket.com/albums/ad181/kev131tc/3MA2007140_zpsdf957947.jpg) (http://s934.photobucket.com/user/kev131tc/media/3MA2007140_zpsdf957947.jpg.html)

We spent a gloriously sunny morning listening to 131s being driven in anger on the hairpin bends far below the onlookers high above. The option is to do this before going to the most Southerly point (Mizen Head). Alternatively attendees can go directly to Mizen head from the hotel and to spend some time there enjoying the sights and sounds and tastes. If you have time have a look at this short movie from this location.

Wow Kev! Looks like you and Chris have been busy once again! ;D

Unfortunately it is looking less and less likely that I will be able to join you as I'm having a few 'life issues' at the moment, not least with HMRC. ::) I also don't have any particularly reliable/proven 131 to use, ferry prices have rocketed and I've 'lost' my passenger - twice!  :'(

It isn't looking good...........but I'm persevering!  :P

Title: We Seat them here, we Seat them there...
Post by: irisheyes on August 13, 2014, 04:51:21 PM
Hi all,

Just putting some feelers out to all the M2M'ers out there.

Because I don't have a 131 myself, Christopher Conlon offered me a seat in his car if I wanted to join in with the M2M parade.

Kevin Doyle has also kindly offered me a lift from Dublin to meet up with Christopher but I have a problem in that I may have to get back to Dublin on the Sunday (Sept 7th) when the entourage hits Galway on the Saturday night/Sunday morning.

Normally, that?d be great as there is a good train service between Galway and Dublin and I could do a spot of freight hopping  ::).
Unfortunately, the train workers union are taking industrial action on a number of weekends, the 7th being one of them and because of it, there are no train services running anywhere on that day.

I could also take a bus from Galway but I think with no trains running, there will be a spill-over on to the buses and that could be messy. There is also a GAA All-Ireland football final taking place in Croke Park on the Same day and I?d say there?d be people travelling over to it from Galway.

As an additional safety net just in case a bus is hard get, is there anyone who is attending the M2M and planning on finishing up on the Sunday and maybe heading back to Dublin that day?  With a spare seat.

If I can wrap another few items up like accommodation I?ll certainly like to try and make it along.

Thanks guys

Rich  :)

After waiting until the eleventh hour I have 'called-it' and will now definitely be joining the '131 Boyz' for the M2M in Ireland  8)

I have been waiting for my client to make a decision as to whether they will be keeping me on further than the contracted next one month notice period, but as they are reluctant to let me know I'm assuming that "no news is good news" - sort of  :-\ - so have bitten the bullet and booked the hotels and ferry.

I won't be in the Abarth I'm afraid - but will be in my yellow 1600 Special, which will probably have a bit of trouble keeping up with all you 2000TC guys, especially over the Healy Pass  :'( - just get a Guinness in for me at the pub and I'll be along shortly  ;D

We're getting close to the event now and it might be worth a few tips going up here to help everyone get the most out of the event.

First of all, these are our top tips learnt on many 131 events so far...

?   Please fill with petrol on the evening of each arrival. It avoids departure delays for the group on the following day and unscheduled fuel stops en route.
?   Please note planned departure times for each day and where quoted, planned stop times. Take a note of the arrival time and add the stop time to establish the departure time.

You can participate in the tour in one of three ways:

(1)   Follow the leader: (this is by far the most popular method based on past experience). It is the easiest but it does require each driver to be alert to staying in visual contact with the car in front at all times. Periodically the leader will pull in to allow cars to regroup but try to avoid letting gaps appear between you and the car you are following. Also try to help the car behind if they have become delayed.
(2)   Follow the directions and your map: This is a popular method if you get lost or separated from the convoy!!  Of course you can do this voluntarily at any time too and join the main group later.
(3)   Sat Nav: As advised already, everyone should have a working Sat Nav. Follow your own directions and rely on your sat nav and GPS co-ordinates. These are supplied for most of the main waypoints. Meet up with convoy at any time.

Please have breakdown insurance in case of a mishap. I'm sure it goes without saying to have valid and current motor insurance for driving in Ireland (where we drive on the left). Please have basics like a tow rope, jump leads, bulbs, high viz jackets, etc.  Also an umbrella!!!  ;D

Very few petrol stations have 98 Octane petrol so please bring whatever additives you will need for your highly tuned twin cam engines!  :) You should expect to drive around 1200/ 1500kms in Ireland.

I'm really looking forward to the event now and I hope that everyone has a great time.... :)

"Highly tuned twin cam engines" - now there's an 'engine type-est' comment if ever there was one! :o  ;) ;D ;D ;D

Looks like I'll be buying a sat nav at the weekend too.  ;)

It's possible that you might be only non TC car there Si....you never know...it could be the spur to get the Abarth finished in time for 3MA15! It'll be strange not seeing your angry red 131 on this event..... :(

If you don't get a sat nav you can always stick to someone's bumper who does.... :)

This week has been a bit trying, at one point I thought Tansy & I may not be going to M2M.

Those out with us on Sunday will know that the car suddenly stop idling and would stall when changing gear. Having traced the fault to something internal in the carburetor, I started to take the carb off and the coolant tube on the auto choke twisted of while still attached to the coolant hose  :'( :'( fortunately I had a sports carb "in stock"  8) which is not to different to a series three super, now fitted and the car is running well. ;D

I am really glad we went for a drive at the weekend or else the failure would have been the start of the weeks drive in Ireland :( Looking forward to seeing you all soon ;D

Different internal jet sizes on the S3 2000 and Sport. Does she perform any different with this carb?

Title: Re: M2M13140
Post by: strada on August 28, 2014, 10:43:13 PM
dont bin the whole carb, this part is replacable, im sure i have a couple some where amonst every thing else. also an electric unit off a ford sierra (of all things) will fit in the same place, (much easier to get hold of apparently).

Title: Re: M2M13140
Post by: Phil on August 29, 2014, 09:48:21 AM
The S3 is driving really well and seems to have more power with the sport carb. It's hard for me to make a direct comparison as I think the S3 carb has been slowly failing for a long time and I have got use to the progressive lack of performance.

Chris thanks for the information about the Ford unit, my plan is to repair the S3 carb I 'll make some investigations about it or maybe turn the whole thing over to a Weber specialist.

Post by: simon131 on August 29, 2014, 09:58:45 AM
Good to see you've got her running nicely again Phil. 8)

As Bobby has said, the Sport carb has bigger jets than fitted to the standard S3 2000TC carb and therefore usually offers a more spirited drive. I swapped carbs from my black Sport (JPD969V) to my brown S3 Super (PBL712X) back in the day and it drove much nicer. ;D ;D ;D

Just been fully serviced, all fluids replaced and generous helpings of rust prevention all over....now all I have to do is to pick some sounds for the trip.  :)

Just a reminder to everyone that M2M13140 is not as well organised as Robert's 3MA13 and with no recce done we might take a few wrong turns on our way...especially on Day 1 in Inishowen. Teams "Hugo" and "Yellow Special" on the Epsilon ferry to Dublin.

That's the first time I've seen (or noticed) open decks on an Irish Sea ferry.
Doesn't seem to look that big either although I'm sure there's more to it than what's in the photos.

No there wasn't much more to it than that. It was a tiny ferry and smaller than cross-channel ferries. But it got us to Ireland safely so that's what counts I suppose....  ;D

Post by: Robert on September 08, 2014, 11:09:37 AM
Having returned to Germany on Sunday evening (on a flight that was on schedule ;D) I wish all remaining participants a perfect last day in Ireland - it was good to see you all again and I am very much looking forward to 3MA2015! Special thanks again to Mr. T for letting me ride shotgun in Hugo (most probably the best 131 Racing Sport in the World  ;D) and my very good friend Simon for escorting us to the cute International Kerry Airport (proving again that three cams might do better than four). Attaching a few pictures (the same as on facebook actually). All my best wishes to my friend Heini with sincere hope for a speedy recovery - you were missed, boy!

Here is my contribution as well as a few statistics...I drove 1707 kms on the event costing I think about ?200 in petrol. Every cent was worth it though....In total we had 21 Fiat 131s and even more remarkably had 20 in a convoy on Saturday and again overnight in the Galway hotel. The previous record from 3MA10 (20 in total & 18 together) was therefore broken and it now resides in Ireland - The challenge is to beat that for the next event!  ;D

Special mention must go to Kevin who brought six 131s to the event - Five of them Sports! It was a very social event with the hardcore 3MAers joined by lots of new faces and cars. It was very unfortunate that Heini was taken ill right at the start but he generously lent his car to his friends (Joop and Hermann) to participate in the event.

And 131 congestion on the Healy Pass - Series 1, 2 & 3...and a Sport!  :)

(http://i934.photobucket.com/albums/ad181/kev131tc/P1060789_zps9a4791c8.jpg) (http://s934.photobucket.com/user/kev131tc/media/P1060789_zps9a4791c8.jpg.html)

And just to prove that the world is indeed shrinking I had a text last week saying that there were 5 131s in Cherbourg boarding the boat for Ireland...and another one this morning telling me that a friend of mine had been doing 120km/h on the M7 to Dublin and that he had been passed by a silver LHD 131 with Dutch plates as if he had been stopped. The driver had a moustache and had a petite blonde beside him!!!  ;D

Glad to let you all know that I/we made it back home :)

The car made 3667 Km without any problems. The owner wasn`t as tough as he thought  ::)

Starting with pain and a wrong diagnosis I only made it up to Dublin... Stopped after doing 1200 Km by heavy pain caused by gallstones I had to stay at Beaumont Hospital in Dublin :'( I really wanted to do this event but sometimes life isn`t always fair...

But now everything is sorted and I want to say THANK YOU for all your messages and phone calls and all the good wishes and offered help :) :-* :D

So come on guys, please post more pics of this event for me and all the others who could not take part at this great event...

Great company, great cars, great routes, great weather - MANY THANKS to the organizers and all who attended.
I'm feeling sorry for everyone who missed this event - especially that certain "german, who spent his holidays in an irish hospital"

Still not allowed to go to work so i had plenty of time to clean the car :)

Only thing I didn`t have to clean were the head lights 8) My original unique Headlight-Cleaning-System did a great job ;D 8) ;D 8)

I only installed it for this event and now they are at a much safer place ;)

Has anyone taken a picture of them in working action? I told my friends to use them whenever possible :D

Hi Everyone,

I have finally got my photo's organised and online the link is below.

https://www.flickr.com/photos/pactdixon/sets/72157647871107445/

In total we drove 1640 miles (2689KM) and managed an average fuel consumption of 35mpg   :o :o

Hope you all enjoy the photos, lots of 131 and tractors ;D including an action shot of a Fiat tractor :o
