How can you tell if its Lsd or not?

Jack up the back of the car with the handbrake off.

Turn one of the rear wheels by hand and look at the other rear wheel.

If the other rear wheel is turning in the same direction as the one being turned, you have an LSD.

If the other wheel is turning in the opposite direction of the one being turned, you have a normal differential.

or a quicker way is lock the stearing wheel hard to the right
put her in first gear dial in 6 thousand revs and let out the cluch
if she goes around in circles it has a lsd  Cool

I used to have an LSD in my Silver Sport and it was more trouble than it was worth! Having tried to keep up with the Stradales during some of the Rally stages we drove during last year's 3ma, I'd say having independent rear suspension is much higher on my list of "I'd love to have" for my 131.

What a friend told me is to get an english axel ( escort mk1 or mk2 ) and use this. By cutting the 131 diff and the english diff and make one. But here in malta they use the 131 diff with argenta shafts because it can handel more power than the english diff. Maybe if you use a atlas diff will be better ? Any suggestion ? Or a different diff that it is easy to find with LSD ?

Hi there.

If you can get hold of an atlas axle, that would be the best choice as they are stronger than the english type ones.

All the Escort rally boys use them and the lsds are easily available for them.

I have a chopped up 131 axle on one of my cars with an english diff casing in the centre as you've mentioned, but i cannot say how strong this setup is because the car has been in storage since i bought it.

If the setup on mine is no good when i finally get around to working on the car,i'll be going the same route as Mick131 on here and doing a BMW independant conversion. Those are strong diffs and can take alot of abuse.
Get one from a 325i sport though,as they have the lsd fitted as standard. Smiley

Cheers,
Wayne.
