I ran 15/40 engine oil in my 131gearbox and it seemed to work fine.

Hi Michohat, I changed the gear box oil in a 1978 S2 1600TC that I had.  The difference was amazing - I thought the 'box was worn out because of the noise but it just needed new oil (about 90,000 miles on the original oil).  I used gear box oil though..

I've looked in the Haynes manual that I have, hand book and the FIAT workshop manual and they all point to ZC90 = 80 / 90 oil

Fiat do not recommend the use of EP gear oils in their gearboxes. The Fiat recommended oil is Tutela ZC90 without the Extreme Pressure additives. Haynes manuals recommend the use of engine multigrade oil in the gearbox and it's OK as engine oil does not contain the EP additives. Incidentally, gear oil viscosity is measured differently to engine oil viscosity so a 90 gear oil has the same viscosity as a 30 engine oil so you could use a straight 30 engine oil in the gearbox if you don't want to use multigrade. As engine oils do not have the same anti-wear additives as the ZC90 gear oil I would recommend more frequent change of oil in the gearbox if engine oil is used.

Hi,

The rallying / racing world in Poland uses only one brand ( even those who are sponsored by other oil brands)

The name is Motul :

I use:

for engine oil :

300V CHRONO 100% SYNTHESE DOUBLE ESTER BASED            10W40
300V COMPETITION 100% SYNTHESE DOUBLE ESTER BASED    15W50
300V LE MANS 100% SYNTHESE DOUBLE ESTER BASED            20W60

(Depending on weather/ air temperature 10W40 - late fall / easy winter,  15W50 - summer and/or 20W60 for extreme heat.

For gearbox gear and diff oil:

- cars not used for competition and w/o LSD:

MOTUL GEARBOX (MOS2) MINERAL  80W90

- cars used for competition with LSD:

MOTUL GEAR FF COMPETITION 100% SYNTHESE ESTER BASED    75W140

Note: If the gearbox used for competition shows hard shifting I use MOTUL GEARBOX (MOS2) MINERAL  80W90

These cannot be beat by any oils around. They protect my engine, gearboxes and diffs. Will not dare use anything else in all of my cars except for Motul VW and Motul Mercedes specific engine oils.

Should be any Dexron type Automatic Transmission fluid. Older gearboxes are best filled with Dexron III which is compatible with all previous versions of Dexron. Current version is Dexron VI and while supposedly compatible with older gearboxes it's thinner with lower viscosity so I'd avoid it. You should have no problem getting Dexron III Automatic Transmission fluid. Are you topping up or replacing?
