Title: Intresting idea
Post by: eugene on December 12, 2008, 04:07:50 PM
On one of the classic Opel web sites, they have a Google map where the forum members can put in there GPS co-ordinates on the map and any other info by clicking the co-ordinate on the map. This is only optional, but most members have registered with ther co-ordinates.
This is similar to the showroom section here.
What do other members here think of this ???.
Is it a good or bad idea ::)
Would love to hear what other members have to say on this ;).Eugene

Having exact details of where you are is not always a good idea. There have been reports of criminals using this info to steal cars, parts and tools. I think it is always better to keep exact details secret. Only PM people you trust the details!

I agree with you both, but there is a middle ground possible.   ;D

How about pointing to just cities. This way we could have a map giving all of us a vivid picture how far we spread between Siberia and California (the long way) and at the same time such inaccurate data could not possibly be used by criminals.

If one lives in a small community it is enough to point to the nearest larger city or town.

It would be a nice thing to look at then map of the world and see 131 Mirafioris from Africa, to Asia, to Russia, to Middle East and to Down Under represented on this forum.  :o ::)

I believe this would be a worthy project and give us an added sense of being  members of a great international group we are.

I am not sure how to do this, but I am sure someone on the forum will know.

As this appears to be the most active and diversified internationally ( if not the largest) and 131 forum today I would strongly recommend a serious attempt to implement this. I declare my spare time in assisting project implementation.

Miro

PS: We know who we are but it would be nice to know that Fiat corporate guys also do and appreciate us. I believe this could only help us internally as well as externally.

How about it ?

Yes, i agree also with this idea. Also think that pointing at cities would be enough to see a nice map of dots, oh sorry i mean Mirafioris on the globe  :)

Yes, pretty much like this but I was thinking of a much much bigger and scalable map  (with zoom-in function) ...

I am very surprised at such little intrest in this idea.I understood the idea of this site was to promote and help the 131 enthusiast and recruit new enthusiast's out there.
This idea on one of the Opel web sites has helped to recruit new members and helped to save some classic Opel's out there.
For example, let's say a guest logs onto the forum and he/she is from the Ukor Eire,he/she clicks on the Google map and is surprised to see how many 131 owners are in both countries+the rest of the world. There are many people out there who think that there areno 131s left anymore and that they all rusted away.
I think Theo's map is ok,except that one should have an option to click on a particular country and see how many registered owners are from there.
Thanks Miro for your support on this, but i would love to see more opinions and views from other forum members.
Also thanks to those who have made ther views on thisalready. ;)Eugene

I don't have a problem with the interactive map idea. I don't know how much work it would be to set up or if someone like Theo has the time to do it, but perhaps it is a possibility.

Good point. Why should FIAT aficionados not be able to do what Opel guys can do? And, big cities are OK for orientation.

Just my five pennies.
