Hi guys

I've been off line recently because of holidays - Not in  Italy this year but we have popped across the pond to New England. Spent the 1st 3 days in Boston before picking up our hire car and heading North for Lobster country! Lovely coastal scenery and beautiful timber built houses everywhere - Every single one looks like it could have been the setting for the Amityville Horror or Halloween 42Smiley

One aspect of the holiday that I was going to miss was the regular sight of classic Fiats in the most unlikely of places. In fact I have not been too disappointed because the population of car owners in Maine do not appear to have heard of re-cycling and classic Yank iron is everywhere! In fact keeping the movie association going, in the last 24 hours we must have seen at least 20 interesting vehicles from the 70s and before and all seem to recollect movies from Deliverance to Bullitt with a detour to Driving Miss Daisy! They are just fantastic and many owners have been delighted to chat about their cars to a strange Irishman with a camera! Cheesy

So, have there been any Fiats? In fact we have seen 4 Fiat 124 Spyders so far but no other Fiats yet. But that is a good return so far!  Smiley

We're heading west later today (after a visit to a local railway and auto museum which does not open till 11.0am - 3 hrs time). I'll post up some pics when we get back for anyone who is interested.  Smiley

You are not far from me. If you make it to Vermont, look me up.

Hi Fiatpwr - Thanks for the invite - Unfortunately I saw it too late. We did make it to Vermont (in fact over the 2 weeks and 2000 miles we saw 7 states in total). I would have loved to meet up and check out your cool 131.  Smiley

We spent 2 nights in lovely Stowe, Vermont, in the Green Mountain Inn which dates from mid 19th century. The floor of the room had a delightful slant which you had to walk at a significant angle to counteract! Smiley We walked 5 miles on the Recreation walk - A well designed and maintained public walkway which puts many of our public walkways here to shame. We saw Inglorious Basterds in the tiny local picture house (well recommended if you are a Tarantino fan) and successfully avoided getting ripped off afterwards in one of the far eastern restaurants. In fact the whole visit to Vermont was very enjoyable including a little incident with one of the "locals".

If you know the centre of Stowe, three roads come together (in the shape of a T junction)and all traffic is faced with a firm Stop sign and no indication of priority.

Hence there is a lot of "After you, no after you, no I insist, please, after you" nonsense (American drivers are generally polite, tolerant, forgiving, non-aggressive, etc...at least in our experience). Anyway, having arrived at this junction which gives no help to "out of towners" (a local later explained that you negotiate the junction with a good sense of timing!!) I bided my time and seized my opportunity to cross the junction and enter the Inn car park. Suddenly a small Jeep driving local drove across my bows from my right and demonstrated that he could raise a single finger whilst keeping the remaining ones bent.

Embarrassingly for him (and his wife) he was going to the same car park as I was (following him) and after parking deliberatley next to him and then seeking clarification of what I had done to offend him, he spluttered that I had been preventing him from negotiating the junction. He started to walk away but I wasn't really satisfied with this so he lamely went on to say that he was also offended by the fact that I was from New York (the hire car was registered there). Not a very pleasant or logical welcome from a local yob which rather annoyed me for a few hours as it felt like it could have developed into one of those school yard encounters!  Roll Eyes Needless to say he received some (verbal) Irish advice on manners. Wink

Anyway, Vermont was lovely as was the whole two weeks and maybe we will catch up on our next visit.  Wink

Close...? That's typical - I did have the idea of asking if any of our Stateside members would be on our itinerary but decided (unwisely as it appears) that the chances of this in such a vast country would have been minimal!

As you say Jon, next time - By the way, how do you negotiate that junction? Our room had a balcony which provided a good vantage point overlooking it and I watched the locals, for the length of time that it took to finish a beer, to determine some logic in its usage but failed!  Smiley

You can get just about anywhere in Vt in less than 3 hours, Stowe is about 1 hour for me.

Maybe you should have had 2 beers. Grin

I may have mentioned that we saw a group of touring Packards in the Adirondacks - Fabulous cars, love those sail boat tail fins, the gaping chrome plated grills and those stylish white wall tyres. I could have spent all day drooling over these cars - Especially the later models. Enjoy the photos.

Music choice inspired by post 3AM singing at GKMR09!!  Wink

Second compilation (of three) of classic American cars - This category is called "Stopping every 5 mins to take a photo to the delight of Jacquie!  Roll Eyes" because this is what it was like on the days that we left the interstates - Literally dozens of fabulous old cars everywhere, every day.

One day, when without my camera regretfully, a convoy of  gleaming & glittering hot rods of every colour and model crept along the main street in Lake Placid with the occupants all dressed in 50s style clothes and hair styles with elbows casually resting out the windows and creeping along at 15mph or so with a mighty bass rumble from their V8s - What a sight and sound!! Grin

Hope you like this latest compliation with more George Thorogood... just for Mark. Wink
