Actually, 1300 TC is inferior only to 2000 TC, much more lively than 1600 TC. Same with classic Alfa Romeo, 1600 engine is worst choice.

Are you sure? The super MKIII have 77 and 97hp respectly, how can it be that the 1600 is inferior to the 1300? I think my 1300 can't be inferior to anything, as when I drive it I can't overtake in almost any situation because the car just hasn't enought power. The 1300 is only good at overtake when the car is launched at 80-90km/h as the engine is at the max torque speed, or to stroll around when the road is empty.

It's not about horsepower. The following applies to classic Fiat and Alfa twin cam engines; I do not know the "modern" SOHC 1600 from 131 S3, so I cannot speak for this specific one. About the others:

The 1300/1400 cc TC engines are revv happy engines (in German we say they are like a sewing machine  Wink )

The 2000 TC engines have torque, this is their strong point

The 1600 TC engines won't revv and have no torque - they are neither fish nor fowl

I did own a 1400 TC and do own a 2000 TC Fiat and Alfa, have driven the 1600 TCs too. And, even if on paper the 1300 is inferior to the 1600 TC, I very much doubt this; driving a 1300/1400 TC is just pure fun.

This is even more true for the Alfa engine, by the way. 88 hp to 104 hp, and once you drove the 1300 you are hooked.

I couldn't agree more Robert, having owned 1400TC, 1600TC and 2000TC versions of the 131.

I remember going to pick up my 1400TC from Italy in 2008 and being literally blown away by the spirited nature of the engine.....it was a perfect example of why Fiats from the 60s and 70s are known for their liveliness. The engine loved to rev and the car always seemed to have a big grin on it's face, like a terrier on a leash. It was very capable to cruising at an indicated 140/150 km/h and could go on from there if asked.  Smiley

I guess the optimum version would have been a 1800TC 131....? What do you think? Was it 118bhp they produced in the 124 CC?

Mine is the 1400tc version and I retrieve that the car can overtake very well also in fifth gear at 90km/h speed, but if you are at 60-70 ore less, it's just dead. I have also noticed that the engine hates going over 4000rev/min (it becomes very noisy and torque falls down shortly) and it's designed to run low of revolutions, as you can drive it in fifth gear just above 55kms/h. If I reduce gear to overtake at low speed, I see that the car is very poor in acceleration. The car is too heavy for this engine. I think that what you say about 1400tc could be partially due to the VERY short final ratio fiat choosed for this version, also shorter than that for the 1400sohc 131, the shortest of the entire 131 range.
