These FRAM Oil Filters are for sale on ebay for 131 etc, don't touch them with a barge pole, years ago I always wondered why a sport I then owned would rumble down the crank on first starting if not driven for a couple of days or more and I knew the shells were fine as I had not long rebuilt it, the problem turned out to be the FRAM Oil filter I was using as there was no non return valve fitted in it so the oil would drain back out of the crank. Used FIAT Oil filters & MANN Oil filters after and had no more problems.

But the filter sits vertical "hole side up" in a 131 engine so the oil cannot drain out of it. Strangely, I have this rattle problem with my Trevi since I replaced the oil and filter with a Champion C102.  Undecided

well if you take it off & compare it with an original Fiat filter or a MANN filter you will see the non return valve in either of those and not in the fram one, its in the centre, don't know about champion filter as never used it but sounds the same problem but using one with non return valve one cured the problem with my car instantly.

Agree with you 100% David use a genuine filter as they are made for the car as is a saving of a pound worth ruining an engine and it looks terrible looking in at an engine bay and finding spurious parts every where as it shows a lack of love for the car...

Well said Dave, toyota had the same problem with the spurious oil filters not having the non-return valve & many a celica timing chain suffered because of, so genuine only for my babies!!

Interesting didn't know that K&N did oil filters. This business with the non return valve? Seems not all the K&N filters have them, it says 'where applicable'. Does this stop the oil draining into the filter or out of it?

It must hold a certain amount of oil in the crank as without it they will rumble down the crank on start up, if you dont want to pay for a fiat fiter buy a mann filter.

It must stop oil draining into the filter then as as Theo says it can't get back out due to gravity.

I think the 1600, 1800 and 2000cc engines all use the same filter.

Just sent a message to the seller of these k&N oil filters and asked if they are fitted with a non return valve and if the answer comes back NO then they arent any good.
